Kedartal Trek: Adventure in the Himalayas

We hope this article finds you in good health and high spirits. Today, we want to take you on an exhilarating journey to the Kedartal trek in the Indian state of Uttarakhand.

Kedartal is a glacial lake situated at an altitude of 4,912 meters (16,113 feet) above sea level in the Garhwal Himalayas. It is surrounded by towering snow-capped peaks, including Thalay Sagar, Bhrigupanth, Jogin, and Gangotri groups of peaks. The trek to Kedartal is considered to be one of the most challenging and rewarding treks in India, and rightfully so.

Region Uttarakhand
Duration 7 Days

Trek Distance 37 km
Altitude 15,500 ft.

The trek starts from Gangotri, one of the four sacred shrines of the Hindu religion. The trail takes you through dense forests of pine, oak, and rhododendron, offering breathtaking views of the Bhagirathi peaks. As you gain altitude, the landscape changes to alpine meadows dotted with wildflowers, gushing streams, and waterfalls.

The trek to Kedartal is a test of endurance and willpower. The trail is steep and rocky, and you need to be in good physical condition to tackle the climb. However, the stunning vistas of the surrounding mountains and the shimmering blue waters of Kedartal make every step worth it.

The best time to undertake this trek is from Mid April to June and from September to Mid November. During these months, the weather is pleasant, and the skies are clear, offering uninterrupted views of the surrounding mountains. However, it is essential to be prepared for sudden changes in weather as the Himalayan weather can be unpredictable.

Standing at the base of any mountain, while staring at the peak of that mountain. A lot is felt by a trekker, from feeling stunned, admiration, to a quick rush of adrenaline, to scared, and then self-doubting yourself, asking - Can I really do this? When a trekker starts climbing a mountain, it’s not just always about claiming the peak. Often, trekking is more about learning and getting to know the mountains. After getting familiar with the mountains, you start understanding the challenges the mountains carry within themselves, and then you start ascending accordingly.
