The first trek on the list, and a perfect mountain escape for a weekend, is the beautiful Nag Tibba Trek. It is located near the queen of hills Mussoorie, and it is also the highest peak among the lower Himalayan range.
Trust me, this trek is not only the best way to spend your weekend, but you will also have a thrilling story to flaunt. The factors that make this trek totally worth it are -
Honest tip: The summit night can be cold. So, don’t forget to layer yourself up, even if the forecast looks friendly.
If there's a "gateway" to winter trekking in India, it's the Kedarkantha trek. Known as the “queen of winter treks”, this trek truly lives upto its name. From giving you an opportunity to walk through a fairy-tale forest, to witnessing a frozen lake, this trek has a lot of unique experiences to offer. In fact, it is often considered as the first proper snow trek, which is why so many trekkers choose it to experience thick and heavy snowfall.
Now, is it an easy trek? It's approachable. The days are manageable, but the summit day might be long and cold. You just have to train for a few weeks ahead and you'll be fine. Also, Sankri is the base of the Har Ki Dun winter trek, so if Kedarkantha gets you hooked, you already know where to go next.
Demanding a little bit of extra time then Nag Tibba. The Chopta Chandrashila trek is another option that you can look into if you are short on time but want to see big views.
Just remember that while you are on this journey, think of it as a scenery trek, instead of a pilgrimage.
Fun Fact: A lot of people don’t know this, but around early November. The symbolic deity of Tungnath moves to Makkumath for the whole winter season.
Now, earlier I told you about the Chopta Chandrashila trek, where you were supposed to cover Deoriatal trek too. But, that trek would be perfect if you have around 5-6 days with you to spare. In case, if you don’t have enough time to spare from your busy schedule, but you really want to visit and explore the beauty of Chopta Chandrashila and wants to seek blessings at the sacred Tungnath temple, then this 3 day Chopta Chandrashila trek package will be the perfect fit for you.
Ever wanted to walk across a giant, snowy meadow with mountains ringing the horizon? That's the Dayara Bugyal trek. A "bugyal" is a high-altitude meadow, and Dayara's rolling slopes turn into wide, smooth snowfields that look like natural ski runs.
The trek starts from Barsu, a village near Uttarkashi, and climbs gently through forests before opening into the bugyal at around 3,050 m. If you push on to the Summit point, you'll get sweeping views of Bandarpoonch, Srikanth, Draupadi Ka Danda, and the Gangotri group.
Camps like Gui and Barnala Tal are highlights on their own. In winter, Barnala Tal often freezes over, and the campsites feel like an empty white world with just your tent and the stars.
It's an excellent step up from Kedarkantha if you want more open terrain and fewer people. The climb isn't steep, but the snow is deep, so expect slower walking and plenty of photo breaks. Bring gaiters. Trust me on that one.
Settled at an altitude of 13,200 ft, Gulabi Kantha trek is another prominent winter trek in Uttarakhand. It is a perfect trek that offers a perfectly balanced trekking experience. Located in the beautiful district of Garhwal, Tehri. Panwali Kantha is one of those rare treks that not just offers those scenic snow covered bugyals view or the panoramic views of the majestic peaks. Carry gaiters, because the snow will be deeper than you can ever expect. Train for a few weeks beforehand, and make sure that you don't rush, while being on the trail.
