Rakshas Tal is known for its desolate atmosphere. No fish or birds are found in its waters, and the lake's salty water gives it an eerie, lifeless feeling. On the other hand, the pious Lake Mansarovar, with its sweet waters, is teeming with fish, and its clear blue surface reflects the spiritual purity of the land.

The sight of these peaks and tranquil lakes along the route will leave you awestruck and filled with a feeling of spiritual reverence. Upon reaching Darchen, check into your hotel and take some time to relax and refresh. Darchen is a small town, and serves as the gateway for those about to embark on the Kailash Parikrama (circumambulation). After ensuring you have packed lunch, water bottles, and essential gear, you will leave behind unnecessary belongings at the hotel and set off towards Yama Dwar by vehicle.

At Yama Dwar, you will get your first close-up view of the majestic south face of Mount Kailash, where you’ll feel a deep connection and blessing, as this site is associated with Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Pilgrims traditionally circle the Yama Dwar three times to receive the same blessings as those who complete the entire Kailash Kora. For those unable to continue the parikrama, this ritual gives spiritual fulfillment.

Here, Pilgrims who have booked horses and porters will go with them, while others walk alongside the team and guide. Those not participating in the parikrama will stay behind in Darchen at the hotel, where staff will be present to take care of them.

The trek is moderate, with mostly flat paths and a few gentle inclines. The journey is physically manageable, though the terrain offers enough challenges to keep you engaged. As the trek progresses, the landscape transforms into a surreal experience with the stunning north face of Mount Kailash slowly coming into view.

Once you reach Deraphuk, the fatigue of the trek seems to vanish as you are blessed with the view of Mount Kailash from the best vantage point of the entire journey. Options to Reach Kathmandu

  2. Delhi to Kathmandu by train + bus

The Vaishali Express leaves Delhi at around 19:45 and arrives at Gorakhpur Junction at 09:10 next morning, or there's another train from New Delhi at 17:20 arriving Gorakhpur at 06:35 next morning. The fare is around Rs. 2440 (£35 or $54) in AC1, Rs. 1240 (£18 or $27) in AC2, Rs. 785 (£12 or $18) in AC3 or Rs. 315 in Sleeper Class - check current times and fares at www.indianrail.gov.in or www.irctc.co.in.
  • Day 2: Take a bus or jeep from Gorakhpur to the Nepalese frontier at Sunauli (Indian side) and Bhairawa (Nepalese side, often also called Sunauli). Journey time about 3 hours, Rs. 55 (£1 or $2).

Buses take 9 to 12 hours, cost about 120 Nepalese Rupees or 230 Indian Rupees (£1 or $2). There are many buses daily, either daytime buses leaving regularly until about 11:00 or overnight buses leaving regularly from about 16:00 until 19:00. Indian rupees may be accepted here in Bhairawa, but not further into Nepal.

4. It's also possible to travel via Varanasi An overnight train links Delhi & Varanasi. Buses link Varanasi with the Nepalese border.

In the unlikely event that TTH cancels a trek prior to the scheduled departure date:

While it is extremely rare for TTH to cancel a trek, we understand that unforeseen circumstances or natural disasters may occasionally require us to do so before the scheduled departure. These circumstances could include continuous rain or snow, thunderstorms, snowstorms, landslides, floods, earthquakes, or any other natural calamity that poses a risk to the safety of our trekkers. Additionally, unforeseeable events such as local riots, curfews, pandemics, lockdowns, government orders, or any similar situations that compromise the safety of the trekking experience may also necessitate a cancellation.

In the event of such a cancellation, TTH will provide you with a voucher equivalent to the amount you paid for the trek. This voucher can be redeemed for any of our treks within the next year, allowing you to still enjoy an adventure with us at a later date.

Note

  • The issuance of a voucher is not applicable in situations where you are required to descend from the trek for any reason. The trek leader may make the decision to send you down from the trek due to factors such as insufficient fitness level, symptoms of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), high blood pressure, exceeding the designated turn-around-time, health concerns, or if you are found smoking, drinking, or violating the rules set for the trek. In such cases, the provision of a voucher does not apply.

In the Rare Event that TTH Shifts a Trek

We would like to emphasize that weather conditions in high-altitude areas are highly unpredictable and can undergo sudden changes at any time, irrespective of the day. Additionally, circumstances beyond our control, such as natural disasters, political unrest, pandemics, and lockdowns, may impact the feasibility of conducting a trek. In cases where we are unable to proceed with an event due to such circumstances that are beyond our direct control, we will make every effort to provide you with an alternative trek that is safer and more suitable.

In such situations, we will issue a voucher to offset the cost difference between the originally scheduled trek and the alternative trek. This voucher can be redeemed at any time within one year from the date of issue. Please note that a refund fee or reimbursement of the cost difference is not applicable in these cases.

Note:

  • Change of trek batch is dependent on the availability of seats in the batch

Choosing the right trek for a beginner can be a bit overwhelming as there are many factors to consider such as distance, elevation gain, terrain difficulty, weather, and time of year. Here are some tips that can help you choose the right trek for a beginner:

1. Determine fitness level: Assess the fitness level of the beginner to understand their physical capabilities. This will help you select a trek that is challenging but not too difficult.

2. Choose a well-traveled trail: A well-traveled trail will have more amenities such as signposts, water stations, and shelter. It is also safer as there will be other hikers on the trail.

3. Consider the length of the trek: For beginners, it is recommended to start with a shorter trek that can be completed in a day or two. This will help them get acclimatized to trekking and build their confidence.

4. Look for gradual elevation gain: Choose a trek with a gradual elevation gain rather than steep ascents. This will make the trek easier and more enjoyable.

5. Check the weather: Check the weather forecast before selecting a trek. Avoid treks during the monsoon season or winter when the trails can be slippery or dangerous.

6. Research the trail: Read about the trail to get an idea of the terrain, altitude, and difficulty level. This will help you select a trek that is suitable for the beginner.

7. Consult with an expert: If you are unsure about which trek to choose, consult our trek expert Mr. Nitin (+91 70600 59773) between 10 AM to 6 PM (Tuesday - Friday). Mr. Nitin will provide you valuable advice and guidance.

Overall, it is important to choose a trek that is enjoyable, challenging but not too difficult, and suitable for the beginner's fitness level and experience.

It is not recommended for a beginner to choose a difficult Himalayan trek. Trekking in the Himalayas can be physically and mentally challenging, especially if you are not used to the high altitude, steep slopes, and rugged terrain. Choosing a difficult trek without the proper experience, fitness level, and preparation can be dangerous and put you at risk of altitude sickness, injury, and other hazards.

If you are a beginner, it is recommended to start with an easier trek and gradually build up your skills and experience. This will help you understand the challenges of trekking in the Himalayas, and also prepare you physically and mentally for a more difficult trek in the future. It is also important to choose a trek that matches your fitness level, experience, and interest.

There is no specific age limit for a beginner trekker. However, it is important to consider your physical fitness, health condition, and personal interests before embarking on a trek. Trekking in the Himalayas can be physically and mentally demanding, and requires a certain level of physical fitness and endurance.

If you have any pre-existing medical conditions or are above a certain age, it is recommended to consult with a doctor before embarking on a trek. It is also important to listen to your body and take breaks as needed during the trek to prevent exhaustion or injury.

We recommend visiting our "Suggest Me a Trek" page. By filling out the form, our experts will contact you with the best possible trek options based on your preferences and experience level. Alternatively, you can reach out to us via email at info@trekthehimalayas.com or give us a call using the numbers provided on our website for personalized assistance and recommendations.

Yes, it is possible to trek with periods. However, it is important to take some extra precautions and preparations to ensure a comfortable and safe trekking experience. Here are some tips that can help you trek during your period:

2. Pack wet wipes, hand sanitizer, and plastic bags to dispose of used hygiene products.

3. Wear comfortable and breathable clothing that allows for easy movement and reduces friction. Avoid wearing tight or restrictive clothing that can cause discomfort.

4. Carry pain relief medication, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, in case of menstrual cramps.

It is also recommended to consult with a doctor before going on a trek during your period, especially if you have a pre-existing medical condition or are taking medication.

By taking necessary precautions and being prepared, you can have a safe and comfortable trekking experience even during your period. We provide proper disposal facilities for sanitary pad disposal during the trek.

By digging a pit and utilizing mud and a shovel, you can easily cover up your waste. This method ensures cleanliness and hygiene while camping or exploring in the forest.

Remember to pack essential toiletries to complete your outdoor bathroom kit and maintain proper personal hygiene during your adventures. With these practices in place, you can enjoy nature while also respecting it.

Layer Up From Head To Toe
Eat Full Meals, never sleep empty stomach
You can keep warmee (if you’re more susceptible to cold).
Use sleeping bag in right way and don’t leave free space in sleeping bag.

For upper body
– Thermal layer
– T-shirt (full-sleeves)
– Fleece T-shirt (for extreme colds)
– Fleece layer
– Thick Jacket/Down Jacket
– Waterproof or Windproof layer (outermost layer, when it is snowing or raining)
- For Lower Body
– Thermal layer
– Hiking pants (normal) or Winter hiking pants

Based on how warm you feel you can skip any of the above layers. Your outer later should be windproof since it is windy at high altitude.
The idea behind layering is that the more insulation you have the less cold you feel, and instead of wearing a very thick jacket if you wear multiple layers, your body will be better insulated against the cold.

The difficulty level of Mount Kailash Yatra is moderate to difficult. For most of the journey, you will drive through breathtaking landscapes, surrounded by scenic views of mountains, valleys, and lakes. However, the trek becomes more challenging during the circumambulation of Mount Kailash. This part of the journey takes you through rough and uneven terrains at higher altitudes, where the air gets thinner. Due to the reduced oxygen levels, there is a risk of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), which can cause dizziness, headaches, and fatigue. To ensure a safe and enjoyable experience, it is important to prepare yourself well by maintaining good physical fitness, acclimatizing properly, and carrying all the necessary gear.

The total trekking distance during the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is approximately 50 km. During this journey, you will walk around the sacred Mount Kailash, completing what is known as the Kailash Parikrama. The trek begins from Yamdwar, a significant gateway believed to be the entrance to the divine path, and concludes at Chongdo. One of the most special moments of this trek is the opportunity to experience Charan Sparsh, which means "touching the feet." This is a deeply spiritual and meaningful experience for devotees, as it allows them to feel a direct connection with the sacred mountain. Many pilgrims consider this moment to be a blessing, as they believe it brings peace, purification, and divine grace.

Throughout the trek, you will witness breathtaking landscapes, snow-clad peaks, and serene surroundings that add to the spiritual essence of the journey. However, as the route involves high altitudes and rough terrain, it is essential to be well-prepared physically and mentally for a safe and fulfilling pilgrimage.

The best time to do the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is during the monsoon season, particularly in the months of July and August. During this period, the trekking trails are in their best condition, making the journey smoother and more manageable. The weather is relatively stable, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding landscapes.

One of the biggest advantages of trekking during these months is the clear and unobstructed darshan of Mount Kailash. Pilgrims get to witness the majestic peak in all its glory. Mount Kailash is located in the Tibet Autonomous Region of China and is considered one of the most sacred mountains in the world. Pilgrims and travelers can visit this majestic peak through the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, a journey filled with spiritual and natural beauty.

The yatra begins from Nepal, gradually moving closer to the breathtaking Mount Kailash. Along the way, you will pass through picturesque landscapes, high-altitude passes, and serene surroundings, making the entire journey a deeply enriching experience.

Mansarovar Lake is situated at an altitude of 15,100 feet, making it one of the highest freshwater lakes in the world. Located in the Tibet Autonomous Region, the lake is set in an extraordinary landscape, offering breathtaking views of the sacred Mount Kailash in the background.

From the lakeside, you can witness the mesmerizing blue waters of Mansarovar, which appear to change shades depending on the time of day and weather. The lake is surrounded by rugged mountains and vast open spaces, creating a peaceful atmosphere. For pilgrims and travelers, visiting Mansarovar Lake is a spiritually uplifting experience. Many believe that taking a dip in its holy waters purifies the soul and brings inner peace and blessings. The serene beauty of the lake makes it a perfect place for reflection and meditation.

Mount Kailash height is 6,638 meters, making it one of the most iconic and revered peaks in the world. While the mountain itself is an awe-inspiring sight, the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra takes you through varying altitudes, offering a mix of challenging terrain and spiritual experiences.

The highest altitude you will reach during the yatra is at Dolma La Pass, which is situated at an altitude of 18,500 feet. This is a significant point of the trek, where the air becomes thinner, and the journey requires extra endurance. You will be the most close with Mount Kailash during the Charan Sparsh (touching the feet). Here, you will be at an altitude of around 18,000 feet, where you can experience the sacred connection to the mountain in a deeply spiritual and personal way.

The minimum age for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is 18 years. While first-timers are welcome, prior trekking experience is preferred to help with the challenging terrain. Good fitness is essential, as the trek involves long distances at high altitudes. Regular physical activity will help ensure you are prepared to handle the demands of the journey, making it a safe and fulfilling experience. Being fit will allow you to fully enjoy the spiritual and physical aspects of the trek.

During your journey on the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, the accommodation will vary depending on the location. At different points of the trek, you will stay in mud houses, guesthouses, or hotels that are designed to provide comfort while also fitting with the remote, natural surroundings.

Participants should be in good health to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience during the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra. They should not have any issues with the liver, kidneys, diabetes, bronchial asthma, heart problems, or hypertension. It’s also important that they don’t have a pacemaker implant. Those with sinus issues or epilepsy are advised to contact the trek coordinator before booking the trek. If their BMI is not within a normal range, they should also reach out to the coordinator to assess whether the trek is suitable. The trek coordinator will provide guidance to ensure the journey is safe and appropriate based on individual health conditions.
