Dudhatoli Trek Itinerary
Rishikesh to Peethsain By Thalisain
- Altitude (Peethsain): 2260m / 7414 ft.
- Drive Distance: 213 km | 7-8 hours
- Accommodation: Tent (Twin sharing)
This beautiful Dudhatoli trek, which is a hidden and offbeat trek, will start early in the morning drive from Rishikesh. Rishikesh is a very beautiful place which is widely known for its spirituality and adventure hub. Your journey will begin from here and you will drive to Peethasin via Thalisain. You will start seeing the hilly roads and green landscapes of the Grahwal region and as you move ahead the landscapes will slowly change from the plains of Rishikesh to the hills of Pauri Garhwal.
On the way, you will also cover Pauri, which is a town in Garhwal region and has very good weather. The route continues through Pabo and then reaches Thalisain. Thalisain is a tehsil headquarter of Pauri Garhwal district and also the last big stop before the trek begins. So you can find all the important things here like ATMs, restaurants, dhabas, a hospital, and a local market. From Thalisain, the road continues to Peethsain, which is around 23 kilometers away. This part of the journey will take you through oak, deodar forest, hamlets, terraced farmlands, and other small things that show the lifestyle, and the region's beauty. You will also see Pahadi locals, and some ladies doing their daily work like cutting and collecting grass.
Peethsain is the base camp for the trek, you will find your campsite located just about 100 meters from the road head. The campsite is surrounded by forested hills and fresh mountain air. You will be warmly welcomed with refreshing drinks and snacks. The trek leader and local team will then give a detailed briefing about the upcoming days- covering trek routes, safety instructions, and an introduction to the team members. This is also a good time to meet your fellow trekkers and get comfortable with the camping setup, which is usually on a twin-sharing basis.
In the evening, you can stroll around and can visit the Veer Chandra Singh Garhwali Memorial, which is dedicated to the freedom fighter. You can also walk up to the Helipad viewpoint, and nearby villages like Massou, Maikholi, Dang, Toulyon, Jaiti, Mansari, Kimwadi, and Jandariya. At night, your dinner will be served, and you can enjoy it under the sky full of stars. Later you can relax and rest well.
Peethsain to Binsar Mahadav
- Altitude (Binsar): 2514m / 8238 ft.
- Trek Distance: 11 km | 5-6 hrs.
- Accommodation: Tent (Twin sharing)
The second day of the Dudhatoli Dhanda Trek will be a refreshing day at Peethsain in the morning. The day begins with a warm breakfast and some stretching, after which you officially start the trek, leaving the campsite to walk towards Binsar Mahadev, which is at an altitude of 2,514 meters (8,238 ft).
The initial part of the trek starts with agricultural lands where the fields are terraced and have small plots under cultivation. The path along this is good, and mostly gentle. There are stones laid along the way that make walking less tiring as well. The landscape gradually starts opening as you progress. The open farmlands are replaced by forest with green oak, rhododendron and Alnus nepalensis. The sound of birds, leaves, and even the coolness of the forest air make this a peaceful and invigorating passage.
After trekking for about 2 km from Peethsain, you will reach Karchat from where you can see the last and best view of Peethsain and other villages on your right side. Moving forward the trails continue and go through a combination of forest and open areas until you arrive at Bilnow, which is approximately 3- 4 kilometers away from Karchat. Bilnow is a lovely little meadow in the middle of thick forest, with a beautiful open space to have your packed lunch. Also, a good place to relax for a while before continuing the trek.
After a good quick rest, the trek resumes, and you will walk around 5 kilometers towards Binsar Mahadev. The path is pleasant with occasional clearings where you can see the glimpse of ridges and valleys around. On arriving at Binsar, you will notice some small tea stalls and Maggi points. In the middle of the forest, there is the Binsar Mahadev Temple that is dedicated to Lord Shiva.
The campsite at Binsar is set in an open area, surrounded by tall trees and greenery all around. After reaching camp, you will be welcomed with evening tea and snacks, followed by some free time to explore the temple area or just relax in the calm mountain atmosphere. Later, dinner is served, and you can settle down in your tents for the night.
Binsar to Udayaramun kharak
- Altitude (Udayaramun Kharak): 2684m / 8805 ft
- Distance: 4-5 km | 3-4 hrs
- Accommodation: Tent (Twin sharing)
Day three is an easy and enjoyable one as it gives enough time to enjoy the beauty of Dudhatoli. You will have your breakfast at Binsar Campsite and from there you will walk towards Udayaramun Kharak, located at an altitude of 2,684 meters (8,805 ft). The total trekking distance for the day will be around 4-5 kilometres.
The path is full of lovely woody paths, open fields, natural landmarks, and is a very pleasant day. The start of the trek will have some minor descents and a forest of oak and rhododendron trees. This section of the trek is very cool and serene because of the cold atmosphere and sound of birds all around.
Then, after one and a half hours of walking, you come to Bharmdhungi, a big boulder, which has a small temple on it, dedicated to Lord Shiva. Locals believe that this place has spiritual significance and there are a number of folk tales and legends connected to it. From Bharmdhungi, the trail climbs gently for about 300 meters to reach Dhanjhar, a small clearing where you can spot huts of shepherds. You will witness the real mountain life here and know how locals live here.
Continuing from Dhanjhar for another 800 meters, you come across Finchu Udyar, a small natural cave formation known locally as a home for many birds. It’s an interesting stop where you can observe the natural surroundings. A short distance ahead, about 200 meters from Finchu Udyar, lies Khaidanda, a beautiful meadow area with a few shepherd huts scattered around.
The route continues for about 1.5 km and you will reach Udayaramun Kharak campsite. There you'll notice a large boulder and a shepherd hut perched on its top. This is your campsite for the day as well, you will rest for the day and enjoy a hot lunch with the best views!
Udayaramun Kharak to Dudhatoli
- Altitude (Dudhatoli): 3042m / 9982 ft
- Distance: 4-5 km | 3-4 hrs
- Accommodation: Tent (Twin sharing)
Today’s trek will be special for you as you will trek to the Highest Point of the journey. The trek today we can consider as easy and moderate. The morning starts with fresh drifting fog and all the greenery around. Even waking up early feels so fresh. All you would want to do is stretch and stroll.
After breakfast at your campsite you will begin the trek. The first 1 km of the trail is a normal path and soon you will reach Lagadtaal. It is a spot from where you can see the surrounding mountains and nearby villages. There is a gradual ascent of about 1 km that takes you to Muskhor, which is one of the major attractions of the Dudhatoli trek. In Muskhor you will find a large boulder that has many small burrows on it.
Locals say that the name “Muskhor” comes from two words! “Mush” meaning mouse and “Khor” meaning holes or burrows, hence, “the rock full of burrows.” About 500 meters from here, you will come across Chobatta (Cross Trails). About 500 meters from Muskhor, you will come across Chobatta (Cross Trails). This point has many different trails, so make sure to stay close to your trek leader and follow the right route. From Chobatta, the last 2 km is towards Dudhatoli, which is a mix of up and down trail.
After reaching Dudhatoli campsite, you will get to see the amazing 360-degree view of the Himalayas. You can look around and find all the beauty of the Himalayas in one place. With this view you can enjoy your hot lunch and spend the rest of the day.

The trail today has a mix of ascent and descent, but you will enjoy every bit of it because that's the beauty of every Himalayan trek. The first 1 km is gradual ascent and descent, and then 4 km is a steep descent. But you will experience and love all the beauty of nature. The last 6 km is on normal terrain and you will reach Bhararisain. It is a small hill town, and here marks the end of your trek as well.
You can rest here for a while, freshen up and prepare for the drive back to Rishikesh. The drive covers around 208 km. With beautiful scenery and the Himalayan air you will relish the views of Uttarakhand’s hills and villages.

Choosing the right trek for a beginner can be a bit overwhelming as there are many factors to consider such as distance, elevation gain, terrain difficulty, weather, and time of year. Here are some tips that can help you choose the right trek for a beginner:
1. Determine fitness level: Assess the fitness level of the beginner to understand their physical capabilities. This will help you select a trek that is challenging but not too difficult.
2. Choose a well-traveled trail: A well-traveled trail will have more amenities such as signposts, water stations, and shelter. It is also safer as there will be other hikers on the trail.
3. Consider the length of the trek: For beginners, it is recommended to start with a shorter trek that can be completed in a day or two. This will help them get acclimatized to trekking and build their confidence.
4. Look for gradual elevation gain: Choose a trek with a gradual elevation gain rather than steep ascents. This will make the trek easier and more enjoyable.
5. Check the weather: Check the weather forecast before selecting a trek. Avoid treks during the monsoon season or winter when the trails can be slippery or dangerous.
6. Research the trail: Read about the trail to get an idea of the terrain, altitude, and difficulty level. This will help you select a trek that is suitable for the beginner.
7. Consult with an expert: If you are unsure about which trek to choose, consult our trek expert Mr. Nitin (+91 70600 59773) between 10 AM to 6 PM (Tuesday - Friday). Mr. Nitin will provide you valuable advice and guidance.

It is not recommended for a beginner to choose a difficult Himalayan trek. Trekking in the Himalayas can be physically and mentally challenging, especially if you are not used to the high altitude, steep slopes, and rugged terrain. Choosing a difficult trek without the proper experience, fitness level, and preparation can be dangerous and put you at risk of altitude sickness, injury, and other hazards.
If you are a beginner, it is recommended to start with an easier trek and gradually build up your skills and experience. This will help you understand the challenges of trekking in the Himalayas, and also prepare you physically and mentally for a more difficult trek in the future. It is also important to choose a trek that matches your fitness level, experience, and interest.
There is no specific age limit for a beginner trekker. However, it is important to consider your physical fitness, health condition, and personal interests before embarking on a trek. Trekking in the Himalayas can be physically and mentally demanding, and requires a certain level of physical fitness and endurance.
If you have any pre-existing medical conditions or are above a certain age, it is recommended to consult with a doctor before embarking on a trek. It is also important to listen to your body and take breaks as needed during the trek to prevent exhaustion or injury.
