Why It Is A Must-Do Trek?

Bhrigu Lake is a high-altitude glacial lake located in the upper Kullu Valley on the eastern side of the popular Rohtang Pass in Himachal Pradesh. An ideal trekking opportunity for both beginners and seasoned trekkers as well as families, the Bhrigu Lake trek is full of nature’s wonders. Perched atop an altitude of 14,000 ft, this trek offers stunning views of the alpine meadows and grasslands and you will catch glimpses of the seven sister peaks. The panoramic view of the snow-capped mountains and their reflections on the lake offers ample opportunities for the shutterbugs to capture nature in its full glory. The trek history is steeped in mythology. It is believed that the famous saint Maharishi Bhrigu used to meditate near the lake. The Lake is not the only major attraction in the trek but the beautiful grasslands that cover the valley are a treat of their own. Walk through tree covers and a moderately steep climb to enter into the grasslands and soon you will be left smitten at all the beauty that lies all around you.

Bhrigu

The Bhrigu Lake Trek takes place in stunning alpine meadows that stretch far and wide, as far as your eyes can cover, and appear to be an endless blanket of green over the mountain slopes. If you are lucky, you will spot horses galloping around the meadows or grazing on the pastures. You will also catch sightings of the mighty Pir Panjal and the Dhauladhar Range dominating the skyline around you. To observe the meadows in their greenest, it is ideal that you visit Bhrigu Lake in the months between July to September and you will also be able to spot quite a lot of wildflowers. The meadows may change color from time to time but they will stay with you right up until the Bhrigu Lake. Easily accessible from Manali, this is an ideal weekend trek for solo as well as group travelers and families.

About The Trek

Bhrigu Lake lies 22 km from Manali and can be accessed easily from Gulaba. While most high-altitude glacial lakes are difficult to reach and may take a few days of trekking, crossing difficult terrains before you even catch sight of the lake. But in the case of Bhrigu Lake, there are no such complications, and trekking through beautiful alpine meadows, you will soon arrive at the lake. It is because of its easy grade, Bhrigu Lake attracts a lot of trekkers both beginners and experienced, and anyone with a basic level of fitness can easily do the trek.

Bhrigu

On your second day of the trek, you will reach the enchanting glacial lake and you can sit there, basking in the serenity of the environment, embraced in nature. Since the lake is situated at a soaring altitude, clouds will be floating around you, a perfect setting to refresh and rejuvenate. While the lake remains frozen most of the year, during summer you will be able to experience the lake in its blue-green hue.

From the lake, you will also get a birds-eye view of the Manali, Gulaba, and Solang valleys. Once you enter the meadows, you will be able to spot the Pir Panjal and Dhauladhar Range and from the Panduropa side, you can spot the Hampta Valley peaks like Indrasan and Deo Tibba. On the other side, lies the Hanuman Tibba Peak, Friendship, Shetidar, Gyapancho, Chandrabhaga Peak, and more!

What To Expect During The Trek

To start the Bhrigu Lake Trek, you will reach Manali, from where you will drive to Gulaba, on the Manali-Rohtang Pass road, and trek to the Gulaba meadows. The ascent is a little steep, however, the trail is not very long and takes about one and a half hours to complete. At night, we will camp in tents in the meadows. The following day we will trek from Gulaba to Rola Kholi passing through lush forests of Silver Oak, Birch, and Deodar, catching glimpses of Manali and Solang Valley on our way and mountain peaks like Seven Sister Peaks and the Hanuman Tibba Peak. Following a mixed rocky and snowy trail, we will trek to an altitude of 14,000 ft to reach Bhrigu Lake. Grasp the panoramic views of the Lake surrounded by snow-clad peaks like Deo Tibba, Hanuman Tibba, and Indrasen, share comfortable tents and scrumptious meals with your group and at night you can sit around a warm bonfire and enjoy fun conversations. What’s a better weekend than trekking up to a beautiful lake surrounded by nature’s galore and teeming with mythology?

Major Attractions

Bhrigu Lake

This is the most important attraction of the trek. The lake is situated in a beautiful location surrounded by greenery and mountains on all sides. During the sunset and sunrise, when the sunlight falls on the water of the lake, it appears crystal clear and you can also capture the reflection of the snow-covered mountains on the water on your cameras. Sit by the lake and absorb the tranquillity with the sights and sounds of nature to keep you company.

Spot Some Of The Major Mountain Peaks

Bless your eyes with captivating views of mountain peaks like the Seven Sister Peaks, Deo Tibba, Hanuman Tibba, Pir Panjal, and the Dhauladhar Range. Witness unparalleled breathtaking views of the mountains on your 4-day long trek to Bhrigu Lake and back.

A Fun Snow Experience

You can begin to experience snow from the second day of the trek itself. The snow-covered landscapes at Rola Kholi offer surreal and dream-like views to wake up to. When the lake is somewhat frozen during the winters, it is equally as breathtaking.

Our journey starts at Manali, on the Rohtang pass road towards the beautiful mountain hamlet of Gulaba. Gulaba is located on the way to Rohtang Pass, on the Leh-Manali Highway. En route, we will pass three mountain hamlets, Kolang, Palchan, and Kothi and the route becomes more and more picturesque as we drive ahead. The Gulaba village is nestled amidst snow-capped mountains, with the Beas River flowing by, adding more opulence to its beauty. After a hearty lunch at the village, we will begin our trek to Gulaba Meadows, our camping spot for the night. It’s a short trek of about 1.5 hrs and a fairly easy trek through grasslands and forests line.  The natural landscape of this village attracts a lot of tourists every year and  Gulaba is also popular as an adventure sports destination with opportunities for large numbers of activities like skiing, paragliding, trekking, and snow scooter riding. The views from Gulaba are nothing short of magical and utterly peaceful. From our camps in the meadow, you can witness a beautiful sunset and stargaze under the scintillating sky at night, experiencing the serenity and tranquillity of the mountains.

Day 2 : Gulaba to Rola Kholi
    • Altitude: Rola Kholi 3,800m/12,500ft
    • Altitude Gain: 400m/ 1350ft
    • Trek Distance:  6 km (4 hr approx.)
    • Steep ascent for first 1.5 hr of the trek followed by a gradual descent to the campsite, via Kolang Nallah
    • The trail passes through virgin forests of Silver Oak, Cedar, and Birch trees
    • Get views of Manali and Solang Valley
    • Peaks spotted: Mt. Hanuman Tibba and Seven Sister peaks
    • Hot lunch at campsite
    • Carry enough water from Gulaba Camp
    • Stay in tents.

Today we will trek from Gulaba to Rola Kholi, our next campsite, situated at an altitude of 12,500 ft. The trek distance is approximately 6 km and it takes about 3 to 4 hrs to complete the trek. The climb is going to be a little steep, so we recommend carrying enough water and light snacks so that you can energize yourself while trekking through the trail. The trek makes its way up the mountains through covers of conifers. You will walk under the shade of Pine, Oak, Birches, and Cedar for the first few miles of the trek, some prominent trees of the Himalayan region, before you catch the sight of beautiful blue mountains through the forest and a rolling meadow in front of you as the forest slowly ebbs away.

width=667

As the forest ends, and the meadows begin, you will witness a vast expanse of lush green grasslands. This is the part where the shepherds dwell with their cattle. You may spot flocks of sheep or horses galloping about or grazing in the grasslands during the summer months. Mud huts line the meadows.

As we start heading south the mighty Mt. Hanuman Tibba appears towering over the meadow with the Seven Sisters peak right below it seated in the Beas Kund Valley below.  This trek also offers a spectacular cloud experience. The clouds here are pretty dramatic as well. They keep popping up as you walk through the meadows and once you reach Rola Kholi you can observe these clouds down below.

As we move further south, we will enter into another forest cover. The trail follows a rugged terrain of meadows once again. This is the most challenging part of today’s trek as the path becomes steeper and narrower right before entering Rola Kholi. Soon, you will enter Rola Kholi, your camping spot for the night. Rola Kholi is another grazing ground at the base of the Bhrigu Lake, so you may spot cattle here as well. Chor Nallah flows by our campsite, your running source for water. Camping here is an amazing experience as at night the sky breaks into a galaxy of zillion stars.

Day 3 : Rola Kholi to Bhrigu Lake back to Rola Kholi
    • Altitude: Bhrigu Lake at 4,250m/14,000 ft
    • Trek Distance: 10 km (8 hrs approx.)
    • Start early in the morning
    • Trek along with the bhrigu Lake stream
    • Steep ascent for about 5 km till Bhrigu Lake
    • Peaks spotted: Indrasen, Deo Tibba, and Hanuman Tibba
    • Mixed terrain, rocky and snowy
    • Packed lunch provided on way and hot snacks at campsite
    • Stay in tents (Twin sharing).

Today, we will trek to Bhrigu Lake and you will experience a great change in the landscape from the last two days. Starting early in the morning, we will have to cover a distance of 10 km in about 7 to 8 hours.  The trek is moderate and starts with a stony trail followed by a steep initial ascent followed by a slight descent, walk on levelled ground for a couple of minutes, and makes a final steep ascent to the lake.

width=667

While we have left the green meadows behind, the scenery unfolding in front of you is no less captivating and you begin to experience the cool mountain climate as you continue to trek up towards the Lake. Till June, the trail is usually covered with snow and in July, the snow in the lower reaches begins to melt, turning the trail to brown and green.  During the early monsoon months of Mid-July to Mid-August, the valley turns lush green due to the rains. The Lake is located between two ridges and becomes visible as we cross the last leg of our trek through large boulders. We recommend going slowly in this part and following the trek leaders instructions as the boulders are slippery and accidents happen all the time. Also, the Lake is usually covered in fog so it can be a little tricky to find the route so follow the advice of our team. On a clear day, you can spot the Pir Panjal and the Dhauladhar range from the lake and also spot major peaks like Deo Tibba, Indrasen, and Hanuman Tibba standing tall in front of you.  From the ridge surrounding the lake, you can also get a bird’s eye view of Solang Valley.

An interesting fact about the Bhrigu Lake is that it never completely freezes whether it is summer or winter and the locals attribute this phenomenon to Sage Bhrigu of the ancient times, after whom the lake is named. After spending some time at the Lake, enjoying its scenic beauty, we will retrace our steps back to Rola Kholi and spend another night at the campsite under the stars.

Day 4 : Rola Kholi to Gulaba drive to Manali
    • Trek Distance: 7 km ( 3 hr approx.)
    • Drive to Manali, 22 km, approx one and half hours
    • Transportation cost is not included in the cost of the trek.
    • Mostly descending trek and easy grade
    • Carry 2-litre water from Rola Kholi
    • Reach Manali by 2pm to 3pm

Today’s trek is an easy one, as we make our way back from Rola Kholi campsite to Gulaba, retracing the same meadows and forests that we came up from. The descent is steep but not very difficult as you are always on the meadows. The down trek is expected to take 2 to 3 hours as you descend to the Gulaba village once again. It is one of the best grassland treks taking you up close to the alpine meadows and will leave you speechless with its beauty.

Note: There is another return route to Manali via Vashist village and Pandu Ropa from Bhrigu lake, but we find this path more sustainable and relaxing and offers a more soothing scenery. Gulaba situated at an altitude of 10,370 ft is a much better exit and less tiring for your legs as compared to Vaishist at an elevation of 7,000 ft.

How To Reach

  • Pick Up Place
  • Drop Place
  • Note

You have to reach Manali.
MEETING PLACE :  HPTDC HOTEL KUNZUM, MANALI

Kindly Note: Transportation cost is not included in the cost of the trek.

Options

1.  Take overnight bus to Manali from Delhi or Chandigarh, taking a bus from Chandigarh is the most ideal option.

  • Chandigarh to Manali Bus: 10 hours.
  • Delhi to Manali Bus: 14 hours is hectic and takes more time.

We always recommend to go for the govt. Buses over the private ones outside the bus station as based on the experience we have found that there are very high chances of delay involved with private buses. Also, govt. Buses are always more reliable. Whichever bus you choose, just make sure to reach Manali at least by 9-10 am positively.

Take a flight to Chandigarh Airport and then travel by bus to Manali is the best option.

2. You can even take a flight to Bhuntar Airport but I would not recommend it because of the high prices of the flight and very high chances of cancellations. In case you do reach Bhuntar by flight, Manali is just a couple of hours away and you can easily get a bus or a private taxi till there. If you do plan to come via Bhuntar, make sure to reach at least a day before the trek starts.

3. You can even come via train, Pathankot railway station is from where you can get direct buses to Manali that is 300 km from there and would take an overnight journey. Even in this case, reach a day before at Manali.

Once you reach the assembly point of the trek in Manali. TTH will take care of your further travel, which is also the starting point of the trek.

  • The pickup point in Manali is Hotel Kunjum
  • TTH’s Tata Sumo, Tempo Traveller or similar vehicles will pick-up you.
  • Pick-up is not included in the cost of the trek.
  • If you wish to upgrade the transport service, please contact the Trek Coordinator.

Trekkers will be dropped at Manali Gov Bus Stand by 05:00 PM, for onward journey from Manali it is advised to make arrangements after 08:00 PM.

In the unlikely event that TTH cancels a trek prior to the scheduled departure date:

While it is extremely rare for TTH to cancel a trek, we understand that unforeseen circumstances or natural disasters may occasionally require us to do so before the scheduled departure. These circumstances could include continuous rain or snow, thunderstorms, snowstorms, landslides, floods, earthquakes, or any other natural calamity that poses a risk to the safety of our trekkers. Additionally, unforeseeable events such as local riots, curfews, pandemics, lockdowns, government orders, or any similar situations that compromise the safety of the trekking experience may also necessitate a cancellation.

In the event of such a cancellation, TTH will provide you with a voucher equivalent to the amount you paid for the trek. This voucher can be redeemed for any of our treks within the next year, allowing you to still enjoy an adventure with us at a later date.

Note

  • The issuance of a voucher is not applicable in situations where you are required to descend from the trek for any reason. The trek leader may make the decision to send you down from the trek due to factors such as insufficient fitness level, symptoms of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), high blood pressure, exceeding the designated turn-around-time, health concerns, or if you are found smoking, drinking, or violating the rules set for the trek. In such cases, the provision of a voucher does not apply.

In the rare event that TTH shifts a trek:

We would like to emphasize that weather conditions in high-altitude areas are highly unpredictable and can undergo sudden changes at any time, irrespective of the day. Additionally, circumstances beyond our control, such as natural disasters, political unrest, pandemics, and lockdowns, may impact the feasibility of conducting a trek. In cases where we are unable to proceed with an event due to such circumstances that are beyond our direct control, we will make every effort to provide you with an alternative trek that is safer and more suitable.

In such situations, we will issue a voucher to offset the cost difference between the originally scheduled trek and the alternative trek. This voucher can be redeemed at any time within one year from the date of issue. Please note that a refund fee or reimbursement of the cost difference is not applicable in these cases.
