Winter in Brahmatal is from December to February, during these months the landscape is blanketed in snow, creating a beautiful setting for snowy adventure.

Brahmatal trek takes you through enchanting forests of Oak and Rhododendron trees, leading you to  snowy meadows. The meadows are untouched and after fresh snowfall its all white around and you can feel the snow crunching as you put your foot marks on it.

When you get closer to the Brahmatal top you get a better view of the Himalayan mountain ranges. The grand mountain ranges in sight while you walk towards them is a view you simply can’t overlook. The Brahmatal Trek in winter is considered  to be one of the best winter treks in India for beginners. Being an easy to moderate trek, it is suitable for both adventure seekers with some prior trekking experience as well as the beginners.

While the trek is not technically difficult, factors like altitude gain, snow, and unpredictable weather conditions can create a few challenges. However, the breathtaking vistas of snow-capped Himalayan peaks, including Trishul, Nanda Ghunti, and Maiktoli, make it an irresistible winter trekking destination.

Brahmatal trek distance is around 24 kilometers which takes you to the Brahmatal summit at an altitude of 12,250 ft. The trek commences from Lohajung. The trail encompasses steep ascents, gradual descents, and level walks. On the first day, you reach Lohajung by driving from Rishikesh. Then we will trek for four continuous days, on the first three days we will have to climb upwards, so we will gradually cover almost 4-5 kilometers daily. On the last day of trekking, we will cover 10 kilometers since we will have to descend we can do it easily. The terrain varies from dense forests of oak and rhododendron to open meadows and snow-covered paths.

The trek is considered an easy to moderate trek, however the snow and weather conditions can make it a bit difficult, but that is also what makes it adventurous.

Brahmatal is also well known for its mythological significance. The word ‘Brahmatal’ translates to Brahma’s lake. The lake is named after Lord Brahma also known as the creator god according to Hindu legends. According to local folklore it is said that lord Brahma created the lake when he needed pure water to turn the pages while writing Vedas. Legends also say that this is the place where Lord Brahma meditated for several years, making it also a spiritual destination for Hindu pilgrims.

The trek begins from the Lohajung village, a small hamlet famous for being the base camp for many treks like Ali Bedni Bugyal and Roopkund trek. At Lohajung you can experience the local village culture, you can get to know more about their way of living, and try local food.

As you ascend from Lohajung you will cross Gujreni and Tilandi. Both are beautiful and peaceful campsites away from the city. You can visit Bekal Tal on the way, it is an amazing brown lake that remains frozen during the winter. And before you reach Brahmatal Lake you can enjoy splendid views from Tilandi and Jhandi top. From the Brahmatal summit, you can spot beautiful peaks including Mt. Trishul, Mt. Neelkanth, Mt. Nanda Ghunti, and Mt. Hathi Ghoda. 

Brahmatal actually relieves you of tiredness when it comes into sight after long trekking. You can witness a beautiful sunrise from the Brahmatal campsite and even map the entire Roopkund trail.
