A Trekker’s Experience on Mount Kilimanjaro with TTH

My Journey to the Top of Mount Kilimanjaro

By Sourabh Das

On January 18, 2025, I stood atop Uhuru Peak, the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the Roof of Africa. It was a journey filled with breathtaking landscapes, incredible teamwork, and memories that will last a lifetime. Climbing via the Machame Route, every step tested my limits, but the reward was indescribable.

Preparation and Motivation

Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro is no ordinary feat. It demands rigorous preparation and mental resilience. Despite my demanding office hours, I trained consistently, knowing that the challenges of high altitude and tough terrain awaited.

Our Amazing Team

trekker sharing experience about team

We were a group of five climbers who became a tight-knit family during this adventure.

  • Ajay Ji, our "Zomato," ensured we never ran out of thepla, khakra, and dry fruit sweets.
  • Sanjay Ji was a beacon of positivity, full of questions and always eager to learn.
  • Tanni, the solo girl in our group, amazed us with her courage and determination. Her never-give-up attitude earned her the affectionate title of “Queen of Kilimanjaro.”
  • Neeraj Paaji and I brought humor and energy to the group, ensuring there was never a dull moment.

Our Support Staff- The Unsung Heroes

Our Support Staff- The Unsung Heroes

Our 22-member support crew played an integral role in our success:

  • Gray, our chief guide, kept everything running smoothly. He moved back and forth on the trail, ensuring every team member was safe and comfortable. His briefings were invaluable, and he patiently answered all our questions.
  • Philbet, our assistant guide, was the trailblazer, setting the pace and leading us through the challenging paths.
  • Ossie, another assistant guide, stayed at the back, ensuring no one was left behind. His encouragement kept the slowest trekkers motivated.
  • Kennedy, our photographer-guide, captured unforgettable moments and kept us entertained with his songs. Teaching him Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and singing Jambo Kilimanjaro together were highlights of the trek.
  • Frankie, our waiter, was always just a call away, ready to assist with a smile.

The Journey: Day-by-Day Highlights

Day 1: Machame Gate to Machame Camp

mount Kilimanjaro day 1

We began at the Machame Gate, trekking through a lush rainforest alive with bird calls and occasional monkey sightings. The trail was muddy but manageable, and the cool shade made the climb pleasant.

By evening, we arrived at Machame Camp (2,835 m), where we enjoyed a warm meal and settled into our three sleeping tents. Despite the cold, the excitement of the journey ahead kept our spirits high.

Day 2: Machame Camp to Shira Camp

As we left the rainforest behind and entered the moorland zone, the climb became steeper and the landscape more rugged. The dramatic change in scenery, with rocky paths and sparse vegetation, was awe-inspiring.

We reached Shira Camp (3,750 m) by afternoon, perched on a plateau with breathtaking views of Mount Meru. That evening, the sunset painted the sky in hues of orange and pink, a moment we took the time to savor.

Day 3: Shira Camp to Barranco Camp (via Lava Tower)

Mount Kilimanjaro Day 3

This day was all about acclimatization. The trek to Lava Tower (4,630 m) was demanding, with the thin air testing our endurance. As we climbed higher, we felt the altitude, but our steady pace and regular rests kept us going.

After Lava Tower, we descended to Barranco Camp (3,900 m). The descent was easier, and the stunning views of the Barranco Wall ahead were both intimidating and exciting. We spent the evening in the dining tent, sipping soup and preparing for the next day's adventure.

Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

The day began with the steep ascent of the Barranco Wall, a challenging but rewarding scramble. The views from the top were magnificent, and our group felt a surge of energy.

The path to Karanga Camp (4,035 m) was rocky, with tough stretches, but the sense of achievement kept us moving forward. The camp was nestled in a beautiful valley, and after dinner, we spent time sharing stories and playing UNO.

Day 5: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

Mount Kilimanjaro Day 5

This was the day we truly felt the altitude. The climb to Barafu Camp (4,673 m) was long and tough, with loose rocks and chilling winds making the journey more challenging. Yet, the excitement of the summit attempt made us push forward.

At Barafu Camp, perched on a ridge, we prepared for the summit night. A hearty meal helped us recharge as we tried to get some rest before the long, cold night ahead.

Day 6: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak (via Stella Point) and Descent to Millennium Camp

Mount Kilimanjaro Day 6

The summit night began at midnight, and the trek to Stella Point (5,756 m) was arduous, with freezing winds and darkness only broken by our headlamps. We kept a slow but steady pace, chanting pole pole with every step.

As we neared Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), the snow-covered crater and surrounding glaciers made the summit feel surreal. Reaching the peak was the culmination of days of hard work, and the sense of accomplishment was overwhelming.

After taking photos and soaking in the panoramic views, we began our descent to Millennium Camp. The steep trail made the descent tough, but the thought of the journey's end gave us strength.

Day 7: Millennium Camp to Mweka Gate

Mount Kilimanjaro Day 7

The final day was a bittersweet descent through the rainforest. The softer terrain was easier on our lungs but tougher on our knees. We moved steadily, exchanging stories and reflecting on the journey we had completed.

Arriving at Mweka Gate felt like the end of a beautiful chapter. We received our summit certificates and celebrated with our support staff, knowing we had conquered one of the world’s greatest mountains.

Reflections and Final Thoughts

Climbing Kilimanjaro wasn’t just about the summit, it was also about the experience along the way, the challenges we overcame, the bonds we formed, and the breathtaking beauty of the mountain. From Ajay Ji’s snacks to Tanni’s determination, from Sanjay Ji’s curiosity to the jokes shared with Neeraj Paaji, every moment made the journey extraordinary.

For anyone considering this trek, my advice is simple, embrace the challenge, go slow, and enjoy the process. Whether it’s singing Jambo Kilimanjaro with your team or savoring a hot meal in the cold, these are the moments that make the climb unforgettable.

Jambo Kilimanjaro—we did it!
