Gulabi Kantha Trek Itinerary
Dehradun to Barkot Drive
- Altitude (Barkot): 1,300 m / 4,300 ft
- Drive Distance: 125 km | 5-6 hrs
- Accommodation: Guesthouse/ Homestay
Your journey begins in Dehradun, the capital of Uttarakhand, known for its greenery and pleasant weather. From here, you set out on a beautiful drive towards Barkot, a beautiful town located in the Uttarkashi district.
The journey takes you through green valleys, winding mountain roads, and along the banks of the Yamuna River. As you leave Dehradun, the road gradually climbs towards Mussoorie, often called the "Queen of Hills." If time permits, a brief stop here lets you soak in beautiful views of the Doon Valley. The route then descends towards Kempty Falls, a well-known waterfall where many travelers take a short break.
The drive then takes you through Naugaon, a town known for its apple orchards. From here, the road follows the Yamuna River for some distance before gradually ascending towards Barkot.
Barkot, a Himalayan town, welcomes you with its refreshing mountain air and beautiful area views. It serves as a crucial base for trekkers and pilgrims heading towards higher altitudes, including the famous Yamunotri temple.
Upon arrival, settle into your accommodation and take time to rest. Enjoy a warm meal, breathe in the mountain breeze, and get ready for the trekking adventure ahead.
Barkot to Hanuman Chatti and trek to Kandola Chhani
- Altitude:
- Hanuman Chatti: 2,100 m/ 6,800 ft
- Kandola Chhani: 2,700 m/ 8,900 ft
- Trek Distance: 4 km | 4-5 hrs
- Drive Distance: 36 km | 1 hr
- Accommodation: Tents
After a restful night in Barkot, the journey continues with a short drive to Hanuman Chatti. This small yet historically significant village serves as a base for multiple trekking routes, including those leading to Yamunotri. The word "Chatti" traditionally refers to a resting stop or shelter along trekking and pilgrimage routes in the Himalayas, where travelers in earlier times used to take a break before continuing their journey.
From here, the actual trek to Kandola Chhani begins. The trek starts with a gentle ascent, and you will see the mix of dense forests, clear mountain streams, and Himalayan villages.
On the way, you will cross Nishni Village, a beautiful settlement where you can witness the simplicity of mountain life. Showcasing traditional Yamuna Valley architecture, the village features wooden houses built with intricate craftsmanship, reflecting the region’s heritage.
A standout feature is the beautifully designed multi-story Shiva temple, which holds deep spiritual significance for the locals. As you walk through, the trail takes you past terraced fields and rhododendron forests, making the journey visually appealing. The villagers, known for their warmth and hospitality, often greet travelers with a smile.
After crossing Nishni, the trail gradually opens up into Kandola Chhani. It is a gorgeous high-altitude thatch (meadow). The word "Chhani" refers to temporary village settlements used for farming and cattle grazing. This area consists of a few wooden huts and farmlands belonging to Nishni villagers, where crops such as potatoes, kidney beans, and millets are cultivated.
Kandola is a peaceful clearing surrounded by dense oak and pine forests, with views of the distant snow-capped peaks. The beauty of the surroundings immediately puts you at ease. Sitting on the soft grass, you can feel the warmth of the sun on your face. The cold air and beautiful surroundings make it an ideal spot to unwind after the day's trek.
Upon arrival, you can relax and soak in the beauty of the meadow. Here, when the sun sets, the sky turns into orange and pink hues. It’s a place that invites you to pause, not just to catch your breath but to truly absorb the beauty of the Himalayas. Rest well, as the trek continues deeper into the mountains the next day.
Kandola Chhani to Seema Thatch
- Altitude:
- Kandola Chhani: 2,700 m/ 8,900 ft
- Seema Thatch: 3,474 m/ 11,400 ft
- Trek Distance: 6 km | 6-7 hrs

On Day 3, the trek continues from Kandola Chhani to Seema Thatch. This day’s journey is a mix of steep climbs and gradual ascents, taking you through dense oak and rhododendron forests before revealing the vast, open meadows of Seema Thatch.
The trek begins with a gentle incline, weaving through oak and maple trees, their leaves forming a canopy that filters the soft morning sunlight. The sound of rustling leaves and chirping birds accompanies you. It creates a peaceful rhythm as you ascend. As the altitude increases, the forest starts to thin out, and the landscape gradually transforms into rolling alpine meadows. The landscape comes alive with a carpet of wildflowers, mainly rhododendrons, that covers the entire ridge. The sight of vibrant rhododendron blossoms is nothing short of beautiful. The trees along the path bloom with flowers, making the route look like a painted canvas, full of life and color. You will notice the fresh aroma of wildflowers, especially if you're trekking in the spring and summer months.
Midway, you might spot shepherds with their flocks grazing in the high-altitude meadows. These nomadic communities have lived in harmony with nature for generations, and their presence adds to the charm of the trek. The gradual climb continues, leading you to Seema Thatch.
Approaching Seema Thatch, the openness of the high-altitude pastureland feels like stepping into another world. This vast meadow, flanked by rugged mountains, provides a perfect resting spot after the demanding trek.
The most enchanting moment at Seema Thatch is the sunset. The sun dips behind the mountains, the sky erupts in a spectacular display of orange, pink, and deep purple hues, and casts a golden glow over the meadows. The golden light reflects on the distant peaks, making the moment even more beautiful. This is the perfect time to sit back, relax, and absorb the beauty of the Himalayas before settling in for the night under a starlit sky.

Summit day begins early as you start your ascent to Gulabi Kantha, the highest point of the trek.
The stretch from Seema Thatch to the summit is a little steep but short, requiring slow and steady progress. As you climb higher, the landscape becomes more beautiful, with snow patches during the winter months and a vibrant carpet of alpine flowers in the summer. Along the way, you’ll pass Jhandi Top, where you can catch a glimpse of some of the peaks. The views get more appealing with every step, and soon, you reach the summit of Gulabi Kantha.
At the top, you will see the 360-degree panoramic view of the mighty Himalayas. You can spot peaks like Bandar Punch I, Bandar Punch II, Swargarohini Massif, Gangotri Massif, Srikanth, and Mt. Jaonli. The sight of these snow-capped peaks makes all the effort worthwhile.
After soaking in the views and capturing photos, you begin the descent back to Kandola Chhani. The trek down is long but easier. You also retrace your steps through Seema Thatch and the alpine meadows. The return provides another chance to appreciate the untouched beauty of this less known trek.
By the time you return to Kandola Chhani, the memories of the Gulabi Kantha Summit will remain etched in your mind, with the beautiful colorful views and surreal landscapes making this day one of the most memorable of the trek.

Additionally, unforeseeable events such as local riots, curfews, pandemics, lockdowns, government orders, or any similar situations that compromise the safety of the trekking experience may also necessitate a cancellation.

In cases where we are unable to proceed with an event due to such circumstances that are beyond our direct control, we will make every effort to provide you with an alternative trek that is safer and more suitable.

Choosing the right trek for a beginner can be a bit overwhelming as there are many factors to consider such as distance, elevation gain, terrain difficulty, weather, and time of year. Here are some tips that can help you choose the right trek for a beginner:
1. Determine fitness level: Assess the fitness level of the beginner to understand their physical capabilities. This will help you select a trek that is challenging but not too difficult.
2. Choose a well-traveled trail: A well-traveled trail will have more amenities such as signposts, water stations, and shelter. It is also safer as there will be other hikers on the trail.
3. Consider the length of the trek: For beginners, it is recommended to start with a shorter trek that can be completed in a day or two. This will help them get acclimatized to trekking and build their confidence.
4. Look for gradual elevation gain: Choose a trek with a gradual elevation gain rather than steep ascents. This will make the trek easier and more enjoyable.
5. Check the weather: Check the weather forecast before selecting a trek. Avoid treks during the monsoon season or winter when the trails can be slippery or dangerous.
6. Research the trail: Read about the trail to get an idea of the terrain, altitude, and difficulty level. This will help you select a trek that is suitable for the beginner.
7. Consult with an expert: If you are unsure about which trek to choose, consult our trek expert Mr. Nitin (+91 70600 59773) between 10 AM to 6 PM (Tuesday - Friday). Mr. Nitin will provide you valuable advice and guidance.

It is not recommended for a beginner to choose a difficult Himalayan trek. Trekking in the Himalayas can be physically and mentally challenging, especially if you are not used to the high altitude, steep slopes, and rugged terrain. Choosing a difficult trek without the proper experience, fitness level, and preparation can be dangerous and put you at risk of altitude sickness, injury, and other hazards.
If you are a beginner, it is recommended to start with an easier trek and gradually build up your skills and experience. This will help you understand the challenges of trekking in the Himalayas, and also prepare you physically and mentally for a more difficult trek in the future. It is also important to choose a trek that matches your fitness level, experience, and interest.
There is no specific age limit for a beginner trekker. However, it is important to consider your physical fitness, health condition, and personal interests before embarking on a trek. Trekking in the Himalayas can be physically and mentally demanding, and requires a certain level of physical fitness and endurance.
If you have any pre-existing medical conditions or are above a certain age, it is recommended to consult with a doctor before embarking on a trek. It is also important to listen to your body and take breaks as needed during the trek to prevent exhaustion or injury.

The Gulabi Kantha trek is famous for its untouched alpine meadows, colorful wildflowers, and beautiful Himalayan views. In spring and early summer, the trail bursts into colour with blooming wildflowers, especially rhododendrons in beautiful shades of pink and red. The summit shows a spectacular 360° view of famous peaks like Swargarohini, Bandarpoonch, Black Peak, and the Gangotri massif. Unlike many well-known treks in Uttarakhand, Gulabi Kantha remains offbeat, less crowded, and is considered one of the best trek for beginners.
Gulabi Kantha is located in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand, India. It lies close to the well-known pilgrim site of Hanuman Chatti, which serves as the starting point for the trek. Located in the Garhwal Himalayas, this region is known for its landscapes, forest trails, and beautiful alpine pastures that bloom during spring and post-monsoon.
The Gulabi Kantha trek can be done in two key seasons: spring to early summer (April-June), autumn (September-November), and winter (November-February).
Spring brings blooming rhododendrons and fresh trails after snowmelt.
Summer is full of green meadows, wildflowers, and grazing cattle.
Winter covers the entire trail in snow. Perfect for those who enjoy snowy views and less crowd.
- Spring (March–April): 10°C to 24°C during the day; -4°C to 6°C at night.
- Summer (May–June): 12°C to 27°C during the day; 4°C to 7°C at night.

- Winter (Dec–Feb): 7°C to 16°C during the day; -5°C to -10°C at night (with heavy snow)
Unlike many popular treks in Uttarakhand that have become overcrowded, Gulabi Kantha remains untouched and lesser-known. The trail has a rich mix of forest walks, flower-filled meadows, peaceful sunrises and sunsets, and clear views of snow-covered Himalayan peaks. Its remote charm and scenic variety make it a special choice for trekkers looking for a quieter experience.

This covers transportation from the pickup point (usually Dehradun or a specified city) to the base camp and back. It also includes accommodation during the trek, usually in tents along with all meals (breakfast, lunch, evening snacks, and dinner) from the base camp onward. Experienced trek leaders, support staff, and local guides accompany the group to ensure safety and provide assistance. Medical kits and oxygen cylinders are also carried as part of the safety protocol. In addition, camping equipment like sleeping bags, mats, and tents are provided. Forest permits and necessary entry fees are included in the cost, so you don’t need to worry about obtaining them separately. Some packages may also include a duffel bag for offloading and mules to carry your backpack at an additional cost.

This allows you to enjoy the trek without the stress of handling logistics.
There are no permanent or built toilet facilities along the Gulabi Kantha trail, as it passes through remote regions. However, at each campsite, TTH ensures proper hygiene by setting up clean and eco-friendly toilet tents. These toilet tents are dry-pit style, where waste is managed responsibly and with minimal environmental impact. The area is kept clean and sanitized regularly by the support staff. Trekkers are expected to carry their personal toilet kits, including biodegradable soap, toilet paper, and sanitizers. It's important to follow Leave No Trace principles to keep the trail clean and unspoiled for future trekkers and to respect the delicate mountain environment.
