Detailed Itinerary of Bhal Padri Trek

This is how each day on this trek will be planned:

Day 1: Reach Bhaderwah from Jammu

Bhaderwah is some 190 km away from Jammu and the trip is absolutely fascinating. The route takes you through some famous towns of Jammu region such as Udhampur, Batote, and Pul Doda. Bhaderwah can be reached through a number of ways, depending on what you prefer and what makes you feel comfortable.

You can complete the whole journey cutting across some of the most picturesque mountain roads, with sharp curves and high slopes. Alternatively, you can board the Jammu-Udhampur train and then book a shared taxi at Udhampur to Bhaderwah.

State transport buses are also accessible to both Jammu and Udhampur to budget travelers.

Whichever route you choose to travel, you should not expect less than 6-7 hours to reach the desired destination because of the winding mountainous roads.

Day 2: Drive from Bhaderwah to Padri Pass and Trek to Bhal Padri Meadows

  • Difficulty Level: Easy - A comfortable stroll along a mild slope through meadows and forests.
  • Water Sources: A few of them around half an hour from the start. Yet you should carry sufficient water with you.

You can effortlessly reach Padri Pass privately or through a shared taxi as it is easily accessible due to good connectivity. The route from the town of Bhaderwah to the base camp is very convenient to travel. You will come across a couple of roadside dhabas at the beginning of the hike, which are good places to rest before setting out on the trek.

Now your trek begins right from here - at the base of the pass - and ascends gradually through the grasslands. You will tread across a beautiful meadow with rocky patches in between. After walking for around one kilometer from the base, the trail gets even easier to tread. You will then start walking almost horizontally just a few meters below a ridge.

Follow the trail till you come to the forested section beneath the ridge. Now, taking a slight arc, proceed to the top of the ridge. This is the section of the trail where you will have an experience of a lifetime as you will be walking on the border between Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh. The boundary between these two states passes right through the grasslands, so that you will have the experience of being in two states simultaneously.

After a short distance, the path enters a dense coniferous forest of pine and cedar, and the clearly laid out trail ascends to the summit of Bhal Padri. And you are now quite near to the central vantage point of the meadows.

Traveling for another two kilometers, the trail will start offering spectacular and panoramic views in front of you. You will start getting a sweeping visual of green meadows on one side, the jagged peaks of the Himalaya of Kishtwar on the other. And the lush green valley seems to stretch in every direction.

Exploring Bhal Padri Meadows

The stunning top of Bhal Padri Trek offers an astounding view of the mesmerizing stretch of Bhal Padri meadows. An exposed path in front of you will guide you toward the village of Bhalessa, where you may as well stop and make your trek a day longer.

You can go down to the meadows and have some time to explore the flat grasslands and the coniferous forests around. You can camp overnight in the meadows provided you intend to come back the next day and have all the necessary trekking equipment.

In order to go back, retrace all the way to Padri Pass and then drive to Bhaderwah. In case you have used a shared taxi on your way up, you had better make an arrangement with the same driver to bring you back.

Day 3: Drive from Bhaderwah to Jammu

To reach Jammu from Bhaderwah, you can either take the same route that you took before the trek or choose any of the previously mentioned options.

Best Time To Do the Bhal Padri Trek

The overpowering beauty of Bhal Padri can lure anyone and anytime throughout the year. Yet the best time to visit and explore this trek is summer and early fall. During this time period, the weather is extremely pleasant when the average temperature is neither too hot nor too cold. During the daytime, it ranges from 12 to 25-degrees and night time temperature is 5 to 10-degrees.

The undulating meadows of this region turn lush green, while the dense coniferous forests present the picture-perfect scenery wherever you look. The forests and meadows are in their best appearance when they offer a wide range of wildflowers, vibrant hues of surroundings, and diverse species of flora. During these months, as the trails are free of snow, the trek becomes more convenient and better accessible for hikers.

Moreover, throughout the early fall, the possibility of storms and unexpected rains are excessively low. By the end of the fall, winters make their way into these mountain valleys as temperatures start dipping by 3 - 4° C every week. From here onwards, the vibrant colors disappear and snowy air starts blowing.
