Gangotri To Chirbasa

  • Trek Distance: 9 km | 5-6 hours

The Bhagirathi River flows alongside, its crystal-clear waters rushing beside you and provides a soothing soundtrack to your hike.

The river’s dynamic flow contrasts beautifully with the serene, snow-capped peaks that form the stunning backdrop of your trek.

The trek involves a gradual ascent, making it relatively easy and enjoyable, with an estimated duration of 5 to 6 hours. Along the way, you'll encounter several natural streams and waterfalls, which not only add to the scenic beauty but also provide opportunities to refill your water bottles, keeping you hydrated throughout the journey.

Chirbasa To Bhojwasa
  • Altitude: 3,800 m/ 12,500 ft.
  • Trek Distance: 5 km | 3-4 hours
  • Accommodation: Tent

Day 04, Today's trek is from Chirbasa to Bhojwasa. The trek from Chirbasa to Bhojwasa is relatively short with a gradual ascent expected to take about 3 to 4 hours, but the trail becomes more barren and rugged as you move further into the high-altitude terrain. The path gradually ascends, with some steep sections and rocky outcrops. The landscape here is marked by open spaces and arid conditions, as the treeline recedes and reveals the stark beauty of the Himalayas. As you progress, the trail widens, providing closer views of the Bhagirathi peaks and a clearer perspective of the surrounding landscape. The Bhagirathi River, ever-present, continues to flow alongside, providing a soothing soundtrack and a refreshing contrast against the rugged surroundings.

Bhojwasa is named after the bhojpatra trees that once thrived here, although now the area is more characterized by its barren, rocky expanse. This area is known for its views of the Bhagirathi peaks, which seem almost within arm’s reach.

During the trek, you'll also encounter various terrains including landslide-prone sections and boulder-strewn areas. Be cautious as you navigate through landslide-prone bends and a stream that crosses your path and few landslide-prone sections follow, so remain vigilant for falling rocks. Throughout the trek, keep an eye out for blue sheep (bharal) grazing on the slopes, and also you might spot a variety of Himalayan birds. These elusive creatures are a highlight of the high-altitude wildlife and add a touch of natural wonder to your journey.

At Bhojwasa, you’ll find the ashram of the Lal Baba, a popular spot for trekkers and pilgrims alike. There’s also a basic campsite and a small guest house run by the Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam (GMVN). The rest of the day can be spent exploring the area, relaxing, and preparing for the challenging trek to Tapovan the next day.

Bhojwasa To Tapovan
  • Altitude: Tapovan - 4,450 m/ 14,600 ft.
  • Trek Distance: 6 km| Duration: 7-8 hours.
  • Accommodation: Tent

Day 05, This day is the highlight of the trek as you make your way from Bhojwasa to Tapovan, passing through Gaumukh, the revered source of the Ganges River. The trail from Bhojwasa to Gaumukh is rocky and moderately challenging, with gradual inclines and uneven terrain. As you approach Gaumukh, the massive snout of the glacier comes into view. A majestic mix of ice and rock marks the point where the Bhagirathi River emerges from the glacier. From here, the Bhagirathi River has to be crossed from Bhojwasa for the further journey. The trekkers and locals rely on a manually operated trolley system. This traditional method involves a metal platform or basket suspended on a cable strung across the river. A team of trekkers or local helpers pulls the trolley across the river using a rope or pulley system. This process, which requires coordination and strength, typically takes about an hour for the entire group to complete. The trolley system is a practical and culturally significant solution in this high-altitude region where permanent bridges are not feasible, adding a unique and memorable aspect to the trek. During the river crossing, trekkers actively participate by helping to pull the ropes of the manually operated trolley. Their enthusiasm is palpable as they work together, creating a lively and supportive atmosphere.

Please note - Since the crossing is a time-consuming process, typically taking around an hour for everyone to get across, you may experience some waiting time.

The journey continues towards Tapovan, known for its vast meadows and panoramic views. Along the way, you'll cross a few water streams, adding to the adventure of the trek. The climb to Tapovan is steep and requires crossing the glacier, so careful navigation is key. Once you reach Tapovan, you’re greeted with expansive meadows surrounded by towering peaks like Shivling, Bhagirathi, and Meru. Tapovan is also known for attracting Sadhus who come here for meditation and spiritual retreats. Additionally, it serves as the base camp for expeditions to Mt. Shivling, a revered and majestic peak. We will set up our camp for the night and enjoy delicious food. After all, the sheer beauty of the landscape makes the strenuous climb worthwhile.

How-Gaumukh-Tapovan-Looks-On-Day-5
Tapovan To Bhojwasa via Gaumukh
  • Altitude: Bhojwasa - 3,800 m/ 12, 500 ft.
  • Trek Distance: 6 km | Duration: 5-6 hours.
  • Accommodation: Tent

Day 6, After breakfast and soaking in the breathtaking beauty of Tapovan, the descent begins as you make your way back to Bhojwasa. The descent will be challenging until you reach Gaumukh. You’ll need to maintain focus as you traverse rocky terrain, occasionally dealing with loose stones that can shift underfoot. Each step demands attention.

On the way down, you will pass through Gaumukh, the revered source of the Ganges River and one of the most sacred glaciers in India. Gaumukh, which translates to "Cow's Mouth," is aptly named due to the shape of the glacier's snout, resembling the mouth of a cow. This glacier is where the mighty Bhagirathi River originates, eventually merging with other tributaries to form the Ganges. The sight of the glacier is very beautiful. A colossal mass of ancient ice and rock, shimmering in shades of blue and white.

Standing at Gaumukh, you can truly appreciate the power and purity of this natural marvel. It's a place that invites reflection, not only on the journey but also on the river’s significance as a lifeline for millions. The area around the glacier is filled with boulders and ice, creating a rugged and otherworldly landscape that’s both humbling and inspiring. The descent from Gaumukh, while easier than the ascent, requires careful footing. Although it’s less strenuous than the climb, it still requires careful navigation through rocky paths. Returning to Bhojwasa, you’ll find a sense of relief and accomplishment as you settle into the campsite. The afternoon offers a peaceful respite, time to relax, reflect on the journey, and enjoy the serene landscape of Bhojwasa. The comforting familiarity of the campsite, with the Bhagirathi River flowing gently nearby, serves as a welcoming haven after the challenging trek to Tapovan and back.

Day 07, The final day of the trek takes you on a journey back from Bhojwasa to Gangotri. The day begins with a bittersweet realization that it’s the last leg of your trek. The 14 km trek back takes approximately 6 to 7 hours, allowing you ample time to reflect on the experiences you’ve gathered along the way. Following the Bhagirathi River downstream, you’ll retrace your steps through the Chirbasa pine forests, with the landscape gradually shifting from rugged high-altitude terrain to the gentler beauty of the lower valley. The long descent allows time to soak in the sights once again. Keep an eye out for rockfall-prone sections and enjoy the refreshing streams and waterfalls along the way.

With each step, you bid farewell to the majestic Himalayan peaks that have accompanied you throughout your trek. Their grandeur slowly fades from view, but the sense of fulfilment you feel is palpable.

As you approach Gangotri, the feeling of accomplishment grows. You’ve successfully completed one of the most revered and scenic treks in the Himalayas. Upon reaching Gangotri, you can take a moment to visit the temple once more to offer thanks or simply relax, basking in the comfort of civilization after days spent in nature’s embrace. In the unlikely event that TTH cancels a trek prior to the scheduled departure date:

While it is extremely rare for TTH to cancel a trek, we understand that unforeseen circumstances or natural disasters may occasionally require us to do so before the scheduled departure. These circumstances could include continuous rain or snow, thunderstorms, snowstorms, landslides, floods, earthquakes, or any other natural calamity that poses a risk to the safety of our trekkers. Additionally, unforeseeable events such as local riots, curfews, pandemics, lockdowns, government orders, or any similar situations that compromise the safety of the trekking experience may also necessitate a cancellation.

In the event of such a cancellation, TTH will provide you with a voucher equivalent to the amount you paid for the trek. This voucher can be redeemed for any of our treks within the next year, allowing you to still enjoy an adventure with us at a later date.

Note

  • The issuance of a voucher is not applicable in situations where you are required to descend from the trek for any reason. The trek leader may make the decision to send you down from the trek due to factors such as insufficient fitness level, symptoms of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), high blood pressure, exceeding the designated turn-around-time, health concerns, or if you are found smoking, drinking, or violating the rules set for the trek. In such cases, the provision of a voucher does not apply.

In the rare event that TTH shifts a trek:

We would like to emphasize that weather conditions in high-altitude areas are highly unpredictable and can undergo sudden changes at any time, irrespective of the day. Additionally, circumstances beyond our control, such as natural disasters, political unrest, pandemics, and lockdowns, may impact the feasibility of conducting a trek. In cases where we are unable to proceed with an event due to such circumstances that are beyond our direct control, we will make every effort to provide you with an alternative trek that is safer and more suitable.

In such situations, we will issue a voucher to offset the cost difference between the originally scheduled trek and the alternative trek. This voucher can be redeemed at any time within one year from the date of issue. Please note that a refund fee or reimbursement of the cost difference is not applicable in these cases.

Note:

  • Change of trek batch is dependent on the availability of seats in the batch
  • In case of transferring a trek to a friend, he/she should satisfy all the mandatory requirements put forward by TTH

Choosing the right trek for a beginner can be a bit overwhelming as there are many factors to consider such as distance, elevation gain, terrain difficulty, weather, and time of year. Here are some tips that can help you choose the right trek for a beginner:

1. Determine fitness level: Assess the fitness level of the beginner to understand their physical capabilities. This will help you select a trek that is challenging but not too difficult.

2. Choose a well-traveled trail: A well-traveled trail will have more amenities such as signposts, water stations, and shelter. It is also safer as there will be other hikers on the trail.

3. Consider the length of the trek: For beginners, it is recommended to start with a shorter trek that can be completed in a day or two. This will help them get acclimatized to trekking and build their confidence.

4. Look for gradual elevation gain: Choose a trek with a gradual elevation gain rather than steep ascents. This will make the trek easier and more enjoyable.

5. Check the weather: Check the weather forecast before selecting a trek. Avoid treks during the monsoon season or winter when the trails can be slippery or dangerous.

6. Research the trail: Read about the trail to get an idea of the terrain, altitude, and difficulty level. This will help you select a trek that is suitable for the beginner.

7. Consult with an expert: If you are unsure about which trek to choose, consult our trek expert Mr. Nitin (+91 70600 59773) between 10 AM to 6 PM (Tuesday - Friday). Mr. Nitin will provide you valuable advice and guidance.

Overall, it is important to choose a trek that is enjoyable, challenging but not too difficult, and suitable for the beginner's fitness level and experience.

It is not recommended for a beginner to choose a difficult Himalayan trek. Trekking in the Himalayas can be physically and mentally challenging, especially if you are not used to the high altitude, steep slopes, and rugged terrain. Choosing a difficult trek without the proper experience, fitness level, and preparation can be dangerous and put you at risk of altitude sickness, injury, and other hazards.

If you are a beginner, it is recommended to start with an easier trek and gradually build up your skills and experience. This will help you understand the challenges of trekking in the Himalayas, and also prepare you physically and mentally for a more difficult trek in the future. It is also important to choose a trek that matches your fitness level, experience, and interest.

There is no specific age limit for a beginner trekker. However, it is important to consider your physical fitness, health condition, and personal interests before embarking on a trek. Trekking in the Himalayas can be physically and mentally demanding, and requires a certain level of physical fitness and endurance.

If you have any pre-existing medical conditions or are above a certain age, it is recommended to consult with a doctor before embarking on a trek. It is also important to listen to your body and take breaks as needed during the trek to prevent exhaustion or injury.

We recommend visiting our "Suggest Me a Trek" page. By filling out the form, our experts will contact you with the best possible trek options based on your preferences and experience level. Layer Up From Head To Toe
Eat Full Meals, never sleep empty stomach
You can keep warmee (if you’re more susceptible to cold).
Use sleeping bag in right way and don’t leave free space in sleeping bag.

For upper body
– Thermal layer
– T-shirt (full-sleeves)
– Fleece T-shirt (for extreme colds)
– Fleece layer
– Thick Jacket/Down Jacket
– Waterproof or Windproof layer (outermost layer, when it is snowing or raining)
- For Lower Body
– Thermal layer
– Hiking pants (normal) or Winter hiking pants

Based on how warm you feel you can skip any of the above layers. Your outer later should be windproof since it is windy at high altitude.
The idea behind layering is that the more insulation you have the less cold you feel, and instead of wearing a very thick jacket if you wear multiple layers, your body will be better insulated against the cold.
