Top 8 Reasons That Will Make You Fall in Love with Har Ki Doon Trek

Har Ki Dun Trek is one of the oldest trekking routes in our country and one of the most wonderful treks in India that showcases the vibrant beauty of the Himalayas, its rich heritage and the culture and traditions of the people that live in those remote Himalayan regions. The trek is located in the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand and is accessible in both summer and winter. Har Ki Dun Trek presents a diverse landscape from alpine meadows, to forest covers and stream crossings and throughout the trek, you will get to observe the many splendours of nature. In this article, we would like to walk you through the many reasons that make Har Ki Doon a favourite trekking destination.

  1. Mountain Views

Har Ki Dun Trek

Trekking in Uttarakhand brings you up close to many gigantic mountain peaks and this trek too, boasts of mesmerizing mountain views. As you traverse along the trail, you will be greeted with views of the majestic Swargarohini Peak, Black Peak, Hata Peak, and Bandarpoonch. The meadows of Kalkattiyadhar also present some of the most remarkable views of Mt. Black Peak, the Kedarkantha summit, and the Ruinsara Range. These epic views along the Har Ki Dun Trek give you the true experience of trekking in India.

  1. Intricate architecture

Har Ki Dun Trek

Uttarakhand trekking takes you through many remote regions of the Himalayas and some of these are a treasure trove of the rich heritage of the region. The Har Ki Dun trek also presents some architectural marvel that lets you delve into the cultural heritage of the region. The villages of Osla and Gangad showcase some traditional houses of the local architecture. The wooden houses are sometimes many stories big and one interesting thing to note is that these houses are named according to the number of floors. A two-story house would be called Dwipara, a three-storied Tripura, and a four-storied is called Chaupara. Some houses also feature detailed carvings in them.

  1. The rich biodiversity

Har Ki Dun Trek

Har Ki Doon Trek is located inside the Govind National Park and stepping into Har Ki Dun is entering one of the Himalayas' most lively and biodiverse regions. Along the way, you may get to see all sorts of cool plants and animals. Govind National Park is home to animals and plants like the rare Himalayan black bear, musk deer, and even the super-elusive snow leopard! The forests are like a green jungle gym, full of towering Himalayan cedar trees, colorful rhododendrons, and sturdy oak trees. As you walk, it's like being in a nature concert, with birds singing and sunlight peeking through the leaves. Har Ki Doon is like a big, beautiful book of nature, just waiting for you to explore its pages!

  1. Postcard-perfect campsites

Har Ki Dun Trek

The Har Ki Dun trek is famous for its picture-perfect campsites that give you jaw-dropping views of the mountains around you. Along the way, you'll come across some lovely campsites like Puani Garaat, Kalkattiya Dhar, and Har Ki Doon itself. Puani Garaat sits right by the Tons River, surrounded by thick forests that make you feel like you're in a secret hideout. Kalkatti Dhar, sitting up high at 3225 meters, treats you to sweeping views of the Swargarohini peak like you're on top of the world. And when you finally reach Har Ki Doon at 3566 meters, get ready for some seriously stunning sights of snow-capped mountains all around you. It's like camping in a painting!

  1. Legends and folklores

The Har Ki Dun Trek is full of fascinating tales and stories that make trekking in India even more exciting! Its name, 'Valley of Gods', already sounds like something out of a fairy tale, right? And when you stroll through the valley, you can catch a glimpse of the Swargarohini Ranges, where legend has it that Duryodhan, from the ancient epic of Mahabharata, had quite the adventure on his way to heaven. Locals will even share stories about how the mighty Shiva himself once roamed this very valley. It's like stepping into a magical storybook come to life!

  1. The Someshwar Mahadev Temple

Har Ki Dun Trek

When you're trekking along the Har Ki Dun trail, don't miss out on visiting the Someshwar Mahadev Temple in Sankri. Tucked away in the village of Sankri, this temple is like a blast from the past, dating back to the Mahabharata times. The locals come here to pay their respects to their special deity. And let me tell you, this temple is a real work of art! Made from sturdy Deodar wood and covered in beautiful carvings, it's like a storybook that whispers tales of the region’s history and culture. So, make sure to soak up some of that ancient vibe by visiting this temple.

  1. The vibrancy of their garments

When you're trekking through the villages on the Har Ki Doon trek, get ready to be wowed by many amazing sights. One thing that'll catch your eye is the colorful clothes the villagers wear. These folks make their own clothes using old-school wooden handlooms, and they even dye the fabrics with natural colors. And let me tell you, some of these outfits are made from super warm sheep wool, perfect for snuggling up in, even when it's freezing outside!

  1. The annual fairs

If you happen to visit the Har Ki Dun Trek during one of their vibrant fairs then you are in for a treat! These fairs or ‘mela’ as they call them locally are bursting with local traditions, music, and dance.  Along the Har Ki Doon Trek, you might get lucky and encounter two special fairs. One, called the 'Magh Mela,' happens in January, while the other takes place during the monsoon months. Now, here's the really interesting part: the monsoon fair kicks off after dark, adding an extra layer of mystery and excitement! It's a time for folks to come together, have fun, and celebrate life. But here's a twist: it's also a chance for couples to run off and get married! Yep, you heard that right! Sometimes, couples from humble backgrounds take this opportunity to start their lives together. They'll spend a few days at a relative's house, and then the elders from the girl's village will come to discuss things and give their approval if everything seems right. These unique customs from the remote corners of the Himalayas are totally fascinating, and being able to witness them firsthand is truly something special!

These are some things that made us fall in love with Har Ki Doon Trek and I am sure you will love it too! Get ready to enter a world where lush green meadows stretch as far as the eye can see, where snow-capped peaks tower majestically above, and where ancient legends come to life in the whispering winds. That's the enchanting beauty of Har Ki Dun!
