ZWarwan Valley Trek Itinerary

Srinagar to Panikhar

  • Altitude:
    • Srinagar: 1585 m / 5200 ft
    • Panikhar: 3260 m / 10,700 ft
  • Drive Distance: 263 km | 10-11 hrs

The adventure begins with an early morning departure from Srinagar, as you make your way to Panikhar. This drive, spanning approximately 263 kilometers and taking 10-11 hours, offers breathtaking views as you traverse the heart of Kashmir’s stunning landscapes. As you leave Srinagar, you follow the Sind River, a major tributary of the Jhelum, which runs through fertile lands and small villages, giving you a glimpse into the daily life of the people in the Sind Valley. You will pass through several picturesque locations, starting with the popular tourist spot of Sonmarg. Known for its spectacular views of snow-capped peaks, Sonmarg is an ideal spot for a quick stop to soak in the breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains.

As you leave Sonmarg behind, the road begins to climb steadily toward Zoji La pass, where the scenery becomes more rugged and dramatic. Zoji La, at an altitude of 11,575 feet, is a significant point on the journey and offers panoramic views of the surrounding peaks. Continuing onward, the route takes you through the towns of Dras and Kargil, offering stunning views of the surrounding mountains. After Kargil, you leave NH 1 behind and head southwest toward Panikhar.

The final stretch takes you through serene valleys and remote villages, ending in Panikhar, a quaint settlement nestled by the Suru River. The village has traditional wooden houses and a peaceful atmosphere, making it an ideal place to relax and acclimatize after a long day of travel. Upon arrival, you’ll have the evening to rest and soak in the beauty of the surroundings.

Acclimatization Day at Panikhar

  • Altitude Panikhar: 3260 m/10,700 ft

Today is dedicated to helping your body adjust to the high altitude. Acclimatization is crucial to prevent altitude sickness, so we'll focus on staying active without overexerting ourselves.

The morning will begin with a light breakfast, followed by an acclimatization walk around Panikhar. This short, easy-paced walk will help your body adjust while offering stunning views of the surrounding valley and mountains. As we walk, you’ll also have the chance to experience the local culture, with traditional villages and terraced fields along the way.

Throughout the day, it’s important to drink plenty of water and listen to your body. The key is to stay hydrated and avoid strenuous activities. In the afternoon, you’ll have free time to relax and explore the village at your own pace. You can rest, enjoy the peaceful surroundings, or chat with the locals to learn more about their way of life.

Acclimatization is essential for the success of the trek, so we’ll take things slow today. By the end of the day, your body will be better adjusted to the altitude, setting you up for a safe and enjoyable trek in the days to come.

Panikhar to Denora

  • Altitude Denora: 3800 m / 12,400 ft
  • Trek Distance: 14 km | 5-6 hrs

Day 3 marks the start of your trekking adventure. The trek from Panikhar to Denora spans 14 kilometers and will take approximately 5-6 hours to complete, with a gradual ascent into the valley. The first part of the trek follows a road that gradually transitions into a dirt trail as you enter the lush valley. As you progress, the terrain becomes more rugged, with the Chelong Nala stream flowing alongside the path.

The gradual ascent allows you to acclimatize to the increasing altitude as you move further from Panikhar.

Along the way, you’ll pass by a shepherd settlement, where you can witness the local nomadic lifestyle. These shepherd communities are an integral part of the region's cultural fabric, and their traditional ways of life have remained largely unchanged for centuries. As you continue, the trail will lead you through picturesque meadows, offering an opportunity to take a break and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. This stretch of the trek provides the perfect setting for a lunch break, where you can relax and take in the beauty of the valley.

After your break, the trail resumes, winding through more forested areas and crossing several small streams. As you near Denora, the valley opens up to reveal a stunning view of the confluence of two valleys. Denora itself is a beautiful campsite, offering a peaceful and serene environment, making it an ideal spot for setting up camp for the night. From here, you’ll be able to enjoy the quiet beauty of the landscape and the surrounding mountains. The night sky, free from pollution, will offer a spectacular display of stars.

Denora to Kalapari

  • Altitude (Kalapari): 3900 m / 12,900 ft
  • Trek Distance: 2-3 km | 2 hrs

This is a relatively short day in terms of trekking, with a distance of only 2-3 kilometers to be covered in about 2 hours. However, despite the short trek, it offers plenty of opportunities for acclimatization and relaxation. The path begins with a gentle ascent, which will help your body adjust to the higher altitude as you head toward Kalapari.

Along the way, you’ll cross several streams, adding an element of refreshment to the trek. These crossings also provide moments of peace, as you listen to the sound of rushing water and watch the clear streams flow through the landscape. The terrain is dotted with rocky outcrops and lush vegetation, creating a beautiful contrast with the snow-capped peaks that rise above.

As you continue the ascent, the views become more expansive, offering stunning vistas of the surrounding mountains and valleys. The scenery here is unparalleled, with snow-capped peaks, lush meadows, and crystal-clear streams. Kalapari itself is a beautiful meadow located at an altitude of 3,900 meters, making it an excellent spot for camping and relaxation. The meadow is surrounded by towering peaks, providing a stunning backdrop for the camp. It’s a great place to rest and reflect on the journey so far. The serene beauty of the landscape and the peaceful atmosphere make it an ideal place to spend the evening. After reaching Kalapari, take some time to explore the area and soak in the panoramic views. This day offers a perfect opportunity for some rest and acclimatization before the more challenging days ahead.

Kalapari to Kaintal via Lomvilad Pass

  • Altitude:
    • Kaintal: 3500 m / 11,600 ft
    • Lomvilad Pass: 4400 m / 14,500 ft
  • Trek Distance: 17 km

Day 5 is the most challenging day of the trek. The day begins with moraine walks, as you make your way towards a large glacial lake located about 1.8 kilometers from the campsite. The moraine terrain is rocky and uneven, requiring careful navigation. However, the effort is well worth it, as you are treated to stunning views of the lake, nestled between towering peaks and glaciers. From here, the trail continues with a steep ascent towards Lomvilad Pass, which stands at an impressive 4,400 meters (14,500 feet).

The climb to the pass is demanding, but the views along the way are simply spectacular. At the pass, you will be rewarded with panoramic vistas of the surrounding mountains and glaciers. The sight of the snow-capped peaks stretching as far as the eye can see is a reminder of the raw beauty of this remote region.

After taking in the views at Lomvilad Pass, you will begin your descent toward Bracken Glacier, also known as Kaintal Glacier. This section of the trek involves walking along the glacier, which is dotted with crevasses and large chunks of ice. It’s a thrilling experience, but one that requires careful navigation to avoid any risky spots.

The final stretch of the day involves walking on the glacier for about 1 kilometer, offering an up-close view of the frozen landscape. Eventually, you will reach Kaintal, where you’ll set up camp for the night. The challenging terrain and long day’s trek make this a day to remember, filled with a sense of accomplishment and awe at the natural beauty of the surroundings.

Kaintal to Humpet

  • Altitude Humpet: 3300 m / 10,900 ft
  • Trek Distance: 16 km | 7-8 hrs

After the strenuous day at Lomvilad Pass and Kaintal Glacier, Day 5 offers a bit of relief with a 16-kilometer trek to Humpet. The trail on this day is primarily through rolling grasslands, providing a more relaxing walking experience compared to previous days. The vast meadows and sweeping landscapes offer a perfect opportunity to take in the serenity of the region. As you walk, you will cross several streams, their crystal-clear waters flowing through the valley, adding a refreshing element to the trek. The landscape here is dotted with vibrant wildflowers, creating a tranquil and picturesque environment.

As you continue towards Humpet, the terrain gradually begins to descend, allowing for a more relaxed pace. The peaceful atmosphere of the grasslands makes for an enjoyable and rejuvenating day of trekking. Humpet itself is a beautiful camping spot, offering a perfect place to rest and reflect on the journey so far. The surrounding scenery is simply stunning, with snow-capped peaks in the distance and lush meadows beneath your feet. It’s an ideal spot to unwind and relax, as you prepare for the next day’s trek.

Humpet to Sukhnai

  • Altitude (Sukhnai): 2800 m / 9,200 ft
  • Trek Distance: 15 km | 6-7 hrs

On Day 7, you will cover a distance of 15 kilometers, trekking through the picturesque Warwan Valley to Sukhnai, a village nestled in the heart of the valley. The journey begins with a few kilometers where a stream from the north joins the Kaintal Nala. The trail then turns south toward Sukhnai, marking the start of Warwan Valley. This section of the trek is a gradual descent, taking you through lush landscapes and offering incredible views of the valley below. The valley is surrounded by towering snow-capped peaks, creating a dramatic contrast with the verdant meadows that stretch below.

Along the way, you will pass through small villages, where you can witness the traditional Kashmiri way of life. The Warwan Valley is known for its agriculture-driven economy, with villagers relying on farming for their livelihood. As you approach Sukhnai, the landscape becomes even more stunning, with the village nestled in a picturesque location surrounded by lush greenery and towering mountains. Sukhnai itself is a charming village, offering a peaceful retreat after the long trek. The village is surrounded by meadows and forests, creating a serene atmosphere that is perfect for relaxation. The traditional Kashmiri houses and agricultural practices provide a glimpse into the local way of life. Once you reach Sukhnai, take the time to explore the village and enjoy the beauty of the valley. This day offers the perfect opportunity to rest and immerse yourself in the tranquility of this remote region.

  • Altitude:
    • Basmina: 2600 m / 8,600 ft
  • Trek Distance: 12 km | 4 hrs
  • Drive Distance: 263 km | 10-11 hrs

The villages you pass through are known for their traditional Kashmiri way of life, where agriculture remains the backbone of the economy. These circumstances could include continuous rain or snow, thunderstorms, snowstorms, landslides, floods, earthquakes, or any other natural calamity that poses a risk to the safety of our trekkers. Additionally, unforeseeable events such as local riots, curfews, pandemics, lockdowns, government orders, or any similar situations that compromise the safety of the trekking experience may also necessitate a cancellation.

In such cases, the provision of a voucher does not apply.

In the Rare Event that TTH Shifts a Trek

We would like to emphasize that weather conditions in high-altitude areas are highly unpredictable and can undergo sudden changes at any time, irrespective of the day. In cases where we are unable to proceed with an event due to such circumstances that are beyond our direct control, we will make every effort to provide you with an alternative trek that is safer and more suitable.

In such situations, we will issue a voucher to offset the cost difference between the originally scheduled trek and the alternative trek. Choosing the right trek for a beginner can be a bit overwhelming as there are many factors to consider such as distance, elevation gain, terrain difficulty, weather, and time of year. Here are some tips that can help you choose the right trek for a beginner:

1. Determine fitness level: Assess the fitness level of the beginner to understand their physical capabilities. This will help you select a trek that is challenging but not too difficult.

2. Choose a well-traveled trail: A well-traveled trail will have more amenities such as signposts, water stations, and shelter. It is also safer as there will be other hikers on the trail.

3. Consider the length of the trek: For beginners, it is recommended to start with a shorter trek that can be completed in a day or two. This will help them get acclimatized to trekking and build their confidence.

Overall, it is important to choose a trek that is enjoyable, challenging but not too difficult, and suitable for the beginner's fitness level and experience.

It is not recommended for a beginner to choose a difficult Himalayan trek. Trekking in the Himalayas can be physically and mentally challenging, especially if you are not used to the high altitude, steep slopes, and rugged terrain. Choosing a difficult trek without the proper experience, fitness level, and preparation can be dangerous and put you at risk of altitude sickness, injury, and other hazards.

If you are a beginner, it is recommended to start with an easier trek and gradually build up your skills and experience. This will help you understand the challenges of trekking in the Himalayas, and also prepare you physically and mentally for a more difficult trek in the future. It is also important to choose a trek that matches your fitness level, experience, and interest.

There is no specific age limit for a beginner trekker. However, it is important to consider your physical fitness, health condition, and personal interests before embarking on a trek. Trekking in the Himalayas can be physically and mentally demanding, and requires a certain level of physical fitness and endurance.

If you have any pre-existing medical conditions or are above a certain age, it is recommended to consult with a doctor before embarking on a trek. It is also important to listen to your body and take breaks as needed during the trek to prevent exhaustion or injury.

For upper body

– Fleece layer
– Thick Jacket/Down Jacket
– Waterproof or Windproof layer (outermost layer, when it is snowing or raining)
