Trek Info
Bagji Bugyal is an offbeat trek, located in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. The name Bagji Bugyal roughly translates to ‘Meadow of Tigers’. Tigers or as they are locally known ‘Bagh’ used to inhabit the region some 60 to 70 years ago, which is how the trek derived its name. During that time, the shepherds and herdsmen used to avoid these meadows to protect their cattle and livestock from tigers. The tigers have disappeared now but Bagji Bugyal remains a beautiful meadow waiting to be explored. The trekking trail entwines along beautiful virgin forests that are yet to be touched by commercialization, gurgling streams, and spellbinding views of snow-clad peaks like Mt. Nanda Ghunti and Mt. Mrigthoni, all waiting for you on this trek.
The trek starts from the quaint Himalayan hamlet of Ghase and takes you to an expansive high-altitude meadow. During wintertime, the meadows are covered with layers of powder that shine and glisten in the winter sun and the surrounding towering peaks create a sight straight out of a postcard.
The Bagji Bugyal Trek is enamoured with beautiful mountain views. The western flanks of Mt. Trishul and Mt. Nanda Ghunti are vividly visible and the sunrise and sunsets over them are simply exquisite. Starting from the base camp to the top, Bagji Bugyal impresses you with the wondrous views of Himalayan peaks.
The meadows are undoubtedly one of the most beautiful highlights of the trek. In winter, the vast meadows are covered in snowy blankets creating a vivid gallery of white against the vistas of majestic snow-clad mountains. In autumn, the meadows are sprawling colours of nature bedded over the lush green meadows.

Note
Your journey starts from Rishikesh, TTH Head Office, Tapovan and you’ll drive to Ghase, which will be the base for your Bagji Bugyal Trek. It takes about 8 to 9 hr to reach the village. Ghase lies a little towards the east of Lohajung. About 25 km before Lohajung, you will arrive at a place called Dewal and from here you will take a detour that will take you to the village of Ghase.
Along the road to Ghase, you will see three of the five Prayag or holy confluences – Devpryag, Rudraprayag, and Karanprayag. Ghase is a quaint Himalayan hamlet with about 200 to 250 houses and is spread over 7 km on an ascent that leads to a cluster of villages. The village developed over the years as the native mountain people migrated from higher hamlets to the lower ones during the change of seasons.
As soon as you enter the village, you will start to get stunning sights of Mt. Nanda Ghunti, Trishul, and Mrigthoni, and the village is surrounded by a block of evergreen forest of Pine, Deodar, Oak, and Rhododendron. This unspoiled patch of Himalayan land offers the raw beauty of the region. The region is also rich in fauna and you may spot many rare species of birds and the Himalayan Musk Deer. While you might not think much of the village, you will appreciate its beauty on the 2nd day as you get a bird’s eye view of the village from a higher elevation.
There is no mobile network in Ghase so make sure to make your important phone calls before reaching Ghase. Also, there are some trekking gear and equipment available at Dewal for rent but you should have it ready before the trek instead of being dependent on finding them in Dewal.
Today we will head towards the Devlikheti campsite. Devlikheti is a very minor village that falls en route to the Bagji Bugyal Trek. Start in the south-eastern direction from your campsite towards the Devlikheti campsite. The trail starts with a steep ascent for about 10 minutes following a gradual ascent for the next 30 minutes. As you begin to ascend, beautiful mountain views of Mt Trishul, Devtoli, Mektoli, and Mragthoni begin to open up on the horizon. In about 15 minutes, you will arrive at the village of Samrata. Samrata is a small village that comprises a cluster of villages and some fields that grow seasonal vegetables like wheat and rajma. It is a high mountain village, that gives you a clear view of the Pindar Valley across it.
Once you get out of Samrata, the trail becomes steep and maintains a steep gradient for about the next 150 m. This can take about 30 minutes for you to ascend and once you reach the end of the ascend, you will see four different trails breaking out in four directions, take the one on the far left to approach Devalikheti. 15 minutes into the trail through a jungle cover, you will arrive at Guru Mandir, where you can hear the bells tolling and the flags flying in the air. Keep moving straight head, keeping the temple on the left. Declikheti is not far away. A couple of gradual ascents and flat trails will lead you to your next campsite.
Devlikheti is an extremely beautiful stretch of land blessed with immense natural beauty. The campsite offers stunning views of the scenic vistas surrounding it. From here, you can also spot the Ajan Top and Brahmatal Top along with Navali Bugyal at your eye level across. The campsite is fenced with 100-year-old Rhododendron trees adding an enigmatic charm to it. You will stay at Devlikheti for the night, the next day we will make our way to the Bagji Bugyal Basecamp.
Today’s trek starts with an ascent for about 30 minutes. Follow the trailhead towards the back of the campsite, which then starts moving in a northeastern direction the incline becomes even steeper. Follow this steep incline along a zig-zag path for about 30 minutes. After this steep stretch, it is a gradual incline and you will also get your first glimpses of Bagji Bugyal. You will enter a jungle zone, and enjoy your walk through this jungle for some time. After a couple of minutes, you will begin to get sightings of Mt. Trishul and Mektoli once again. For shutterbugs, this is a great moment to capture some nice stills.
The Bagji Bugyal Base Camp is about an hours walk from here. Once you reach the Base Camp, you can see Chaukhamba Peak on the left-hand side as well as a part of Kedar Dome peeking from the clouds. Bagji Bugyal summit is 45 minutes hike away from here, which we will trek to the next morning. In the evening, bask in the beauty of the campsite. On the one side, you can see the Garhwal and Kumaon Himalayas spreading far ahead, and on the other side, the sun sets beautifully beyond the Narvali Top.
Today, we will rise before sunrise to head towards the Bagji Bugyal Top to watch the sunrise from the top. It is just a 45-minute walk from the campsite. Follow the ascending trail in the northeast direction. We will watch the beautiful sunrise from the summit and spend some basking absorbing the beautiful scene before us. You get a 360-degree panorama of the Ballan Valley, Lohajung, Dewal Ghati, Brahmatal Top, the trail to Roopkund, Ali Bugyal, Kaali Daak, and giants like Mt. Trishul, Mt, Nanda Ghunti, Mt. Mrigtoli, and Mt. Devtoli. Sunrays hitting the peaks of the mountains early in the morning are a wonderful sight to behold.
After spending some relaxing moments at Bagji Top, we will head down towards Dhulamb. There is a steep descent of about 45 minutes through a dense forest. Sunrise peeps in through the canopy, here and there, creating a beautiful sight. Towards the end of the descent, you will come across small clearings, which are used as pasture lands by the local shepherds. Head northwards and its a gradual walk up and down for about the next 2 hrs followed by gradual ascents and descents for another 2 hrs. En route, you will come across the Buniya meadows where you will again spot shepherds grazing their cattle and sheep. You can rest here for a while if you feel like it. After this, there is a final ascent of about 30 minutes post which you will arrive at the Dhulamb campsite. Dhulamb campsite is located in a small stretch of clearing under the shade of Oak trees. There is a water source close to the Dhulamb campsite, where you can spot a lot of birds as well.
This is the last day of trekking and the penultimate day of your journey. The trekking trail starts from the water source near the Dhulamb Campsite. It is a 10-minute gradual ascend followed by a flat walk for 30 minutes. At the end of the walk, you will arrive at open meadows on an inclined ground, and from here it is a steep descent to Himni. Keep walking downwards and you will spot some Chaniya huts, your first signs of civilization after spending a couple of days in the wild. As you keep moving ahead, you will arrive at a grassy patch of land and a pond surrounded by Oak trees. You can fill your water bottles here. After about 30 minutes more, you will arrive at another water source, which is a water reservoir used by the people of the Himni Village. An hours walk later you will finally arrive at the village. You can see how simple life is here in these remote corners.
The last day of your trip. Today, you will drive from Himni village to Rishikesh, ending your trip and going back with a lot of wonderful memories. It takes 8-9 hours to reach Rishikesh, again going through picturesque sceneries. You can book a bus back the same night or add an extra day to explore Rishikesh.

In the unlikely event that TTH cancels a trek prior to the scheduled departure date:
While it is extremely rare for TTH to cancel a trek, we understand that unforeseen circumstances or natural disasters may occasionally require us to do so before the scheduled departure. These circumstances could include continuous rain or snow, thunderstorms, snowstorms, landslides, floods, earthquakes, or any other natural calamity that poses a risk to the safety of our trekkers. Additionally, unforeseeable events such as local riots, curfews, pandemics, lockdowns, government orders, or any similar situations that compromise the safety of the trekking experience may also necessitate a cancellation.
In the event of such a cancellation, TTH will provide you with a voucher equivalent to the amount you paid for the trek. This voucher can be redeemed for any of our treks within the next year, allowing you to still enjoy an adventure with us at a later date.
Note

We would like to emphasize that weather conditions in high-altitude areas are highly unpredictable and can undergo sudden changes at any time, irrespective of the day. Additionally, circumstances beyond our control, such as natural disasters, political unrest, pandemics, and lockdowns, may impact the feasibility of conducting a trek. In cases where we are unable to proceed with an event due to such circumstances that are beyond our direct control, we will make every effort to provide you with an alternative trek that is safer and more suitable.
In such situations, we will issue a voucher to offset the cost difference between the originally scheduled trek and the alternative trek. This voucher can be redeemed at any time within one year from the date of issue. Please note that a refund fee or reimbursement of the cost difference is not applicable in these cases.
