Why Dzo Jongo Is A Must Do Trek

Dzo Jongo Peak is a hidden gem and an offbeat trekking destination that not many people are aware of. The trek starts at Leh and takes you through the beautiful Markha Valley and what makes this trek more a mystery is that the Dzo Jongo peak is not visible until you reach the base camp. In fact, in the first few days of your trekking, you will keep wondering where the peak actually is. Markha Valley is popular for its Kang Yatse 1 amp 2 peaks but there is another 6000-meter peak hiding in the valley, slightly taller than Stok Kangri the Dzo Jongo peak.

While the climb to the Dzo Jongo summit is not technical, it is quite a steep and challenging one. The Kang Yatse peaks have a technical climb but the Dzo Jongo doesnt, which makes it a great alternative. The peak is situated just ahead of Markha Valley next to the Kang Yatse peaks and many routes can take you to Dzo Jongo, the route through Markha Valley, the same trail that takes you to the Kang Yatse peak is the most popular one. However, we take the route from the Lato side.

Dzo Jongo has two summits and the climb to the original summit is very steep and enduring. From the summit, you will get excellent views of Kang Yatse peaks, Stok Kangri, Changthang Valley mountains, and the Karakoram Range in the distance. While the trek is not technical, you will need crampons and roping up to ascend to the summit, quite similar to Stok Kangri. One of the best things about the trek is that it takes you through not one but three high passes, Shiul, Chak, and Kongmaru La Pass. A perfect trek for experienced trekkers and for those who want to conquer a 6000-er, which is not as tedious.

About The Trek

Located in the Markha Valley, which is popular for the Kang Yatse trek, Dzo Jongo is a hidden 6000 m peak that an experienced trekker can scale by taking the requisite measures and a certain level of physical fitness.

Our Journey starts at Leh. On the day you arrive at Leh, you will check into a hotel and receive a briefing from our team about the trek. Briefing is given later in the evening and if you wish, you can rent or purchase trekking gear from Leh. We recommend not to visit any high-altitude locations while in Leh as this may affect your physical condition. ATM points are available at Leh, so you can withdraw cash from here if you want.

The next day will also be spent at Leh as an acclimatization day. We will visit monasteries like Thiksey, Shey, Sangam, and Hemis. We will again avoid high altitude places and the visit to monasteries is to help you acclimatize with the weather and the temperature conditions. 

On day 3,  we will drive from Leh to Lato. Lato is situated at an altitude of 13,2000 ft and it is situated at a distance of 70 km from Leh. In Lato, we will check into a local guesthouse. Today we will be sightseeing around this oldest village of Ladakh. You can visit monasteries as well as the famous Druk Padam Karpo school where some scenes of the 3 idiots movie was shot.

The next day is our first trekking day after arriving in Ladakh, we will trek from Lato to Shiul Sumdo, where we will trek along a river and go through a few river crossings. The trek has a moderate ascent and takes you to an altitude of 15000 ft. We will have lunch at our campsite and sleep in tents at night.

On day 5, we will trek from Shiul Sumdo to Chaksung via Shiul Pass. Shiul Pass is situated at an altitude of 16,700 ft and our campsite at Chaksung is situated at an altitude of 16,100 ft. Today’s trek also has a moderate ascent. On reaching the Chaksung campsite, we will have our lunch and sleep in tents again at night.

The following day we will trek up to the Dzo Jongo Base Camp. While the distance to the Dzo Jongo Base Camp from Chaksung is not much, the ascent is very difficult and we will be crossing Chak Pass at 16,7000 ft to reach our Dzo Jongo base camp at 117,100 ft.

Day 7 is a rest and training day where you will prepare with us for trekking to the summit. Our team will provide the necessary technical equipment and teach you how to use them. You will also be given a briefing about the trek. You are recommended to take as much rest as possible today and not exhaust your body. You will need sufficient energy to climb the summit the next day.

Today we will summit the Dzo Jongo peak and return to the base camp. It is a challenging climb today so prepare yourself mentally. From base camp to the first rest point it is a fairly easy and flat walk that will take about 20 to 30 minutes. From the rest point, there’s a gradual ascent to the slope and then a moderate ascent up to the point of technical climb and from here it is a technical climb of about 2 to 3.5 hrs, followed by another 1.5 to 2 hrs of difficult climb to reach the summit.  Witness the remarkable scenery of Tibet and Zanskar Valley from the top and the mighty Karakoram Ranges. After spending some time at the top we will descend down to the base camp once again.

On Day 9, we will trek from the Dzo Jongo Base camp to Chokdo. Kongmaru La is our first halt point on the trek. Kongmaru La is a high altitude pass and from here the descent to Chokdo is a little long. On the way, you will get refreshing views of the Indus Valley and Ladakh range. The descent is quite steep through rocky terrain. Once we reach Chokdo, we will drive back to Leh on the same day and rest at a hotel at night, concluding our journey.

We also like to keep an additional buffer day in the itinerary and it will be used if we are unable to make the summit due to any unforeseen circumstances. If the buffer day is not used, you can use it to enjoy rafting in the Zanskar River or other sightseeing activities in Ladakh.

What Can You Expect At The Trek

Set amidst the scenic Markha Valley in Ladakh, the Dzo Jongo peak trek will test your trekking mettle. While it is a non-technical climb, it is equally as enduring, so you need to have a good deal of trekking experience and physical fitness to complete the trek.

The steep and challenging yet doable Dzo Jongo peak trek is perfect to quench your thirst for adventure and thrill and also bring you face to face with the scenic splendor of the Markha Valley. En route, you will cross three high-altitude passes, Shiul, Chak, and Kongmaru La which adds to the difficulty of the trek.

You will hike through a variety of terrains, some moderate, some difficult, and some extremely challenging with bits of technical parts as well. The 9-day long trip will be every bit adventurous and memorable. 

Who can participate

    • Age; 15 years.
    • Experience of any high altitude trek, at least 1 treks of 5,000m/16,400ft.
    • The climber must be fit and have sufficient stamina to cover 6 km of distance in 30 minutes without a stress.
    • The climber should be able to carry a 12-16 kg backpack.



    • Heart problem, Very High blood pressure, Asthma, and Epilepsy cannot be reconciled on these missions. The climber must not have the conditions mentioned above.
    • Junior trekkers (below 15 years) should have a company of parent/guardian.
    • Trekkers between 15 to 18 years can come solo with the disclaimer form signed by parent/guardian.


Day 1 : Arrival Leh
    • Altitude: 3500 m/11500 ft.
    • Network: Available (only post-paid).
    • ATM Point: Available in Leh.
    • Stay: In the hotel.
    • Briefing at 5 pm.
    • Trek gear is available in Leh for rent or purchase.
    • Bring a copy of ID proof and 2 photographs, for foreigners copy of passport and visa, is mandatory.
    • Visiting high altitude places or passes are not advisable.
    • Alcohol consumption and smoking are prohibited.

This is the beginning of your exciting expedition. On Day 1 you will arrive at the scenic destination of Leh. Leh is set in between the barren mountains of Ladakh, absorbing its beauty. Today you will get acquainted with your team and receive a briefing from our team about the basics of mountain treks and the conditions that you can expect at Dzo Jongo. Leh is situated at an altitude of 3500 meters and the trek goes further upwards here on as such it is necessary to give your body adequate time to acclimatize.


It is recommended to drink sufficient water, avoid exertion activities and let your body acclimatize. Rent gear is available for purchase and rent in Leh and you can purchase or rent anything if required. Today’s schedule is flexible and we will mostly observe how everyone is adjusting to the altitude. Traveling to high-altitude places is not recommended and you should rest as much as possible in your hotel.

Day 2 : Leh (Acclimatization day)
    • Sightseeing and acclimatization
    • Prominent monasteries: Shey, Thiksey, Sangam, and Hemis
    • Stay: In the hotel
    • Visiting high altitude places or passes are not advisable
    • Avoid river rafting, you can plan it after the trek

Today we have an entire sightseeing day ahead of us and we will visit various monasteries and acclimatize at higher altitudes. In Leh Old Town, you can visit the Leh-Palace, which is a legacy left behind by the ancient kingdoms of Ladakh and is built by Drugpa Bumdey - the King. The palace is situated on a high mountain ridge and from here, you will get a bird’s eye view of the entire town.


You can visit the many ancient Buddhist monasteries in the town of Leh. These monasteries are a gateway serenity away from the bustling city life. Thikse, Namgyal Tsemo, Sangam, and Hemis are some popular monasteries and the perfect place to find some peace and fortitude. Thiksey monastery was built in the 14 th century by monks sent by the Dalai Lama from Tibet. The Leh market is also a great place to shop for souvenirs, the entire market is adorned with many colorful shops. In the evening you can relax comfortably in the hotel.

Day 3 : Leh to Lato (Sightseeing Day)
    • Altitude:- 4,000m/13,200ft
    • Altitude difference: 500m/1,700ft.
    • Distance: 70 km, 2 hrs
    • Lato is one of the oldest villages in Ladakh
    • 60 million years ago catastrophic collision took place at Lato

Today we drive to Lato, which is at a slightly higher altitude than Leh. Lato is situated at an altitude of 4000m and is about 70 km away from Leh. After reaching Lato, we will spend another acclimatization, which is much needed. The drive to Lato is characterized by the same barren landscapes typical of Ladakh along with the backdrop of a clear blue sky. The road to Lato is exquisitely beautiful and gives the perfect introduction to the incredible landscapes of Ladakh.


Lato is one of the oldest villages in Ladakh and is home to one of the oldest monasteries in the Gia village. Lato lies in the same spot, where there was a catastrophic collision 60 million ago. After sightseeing in Thiksey Monastery, Hemis monastery, and the Druk Padma Karpo School, the school popularized by the 3 Idiots movie, we will drive to Lato. At night we will relax in our hotel and get the adequate amount of rest necessary for trekking the following day.

Day 4 : Lato to Shiul Sumdo
    • Altitude:- 4,600m/15,000ft (Shiul Sumdo)
    • Altitude Gain:- 600m/ 1,800ft
    • Trek Distance: 5 km, 4 hrs
    • Moderate ascent, walk along the river with 3-4 river crossing
    • Refill water from the river
    • Hot lunch provided at the campsite
    • Stay: in tents (twin sharing)

Today is the day our trekking begins. Today we will trek from Lato to Shiul Sumdo. The trek from Lato to Shiul Sumdo takes you to an altitude of 4600 meters and will approximately take 4 hrs depending on the speed of the trekkers. The trek today has a moderate ascent and we have to walk along a river and even cross the river 3 to 4 times before we reach our campsite at Shiul Sumdo.


The river is our water source here and you can refill your bottles from here. If you hike at a moderate speed, you will arrive at the campsite by lunchtime, and have a hot lunch here. Tonight we will rest in our camps. The night sky here is simply exquisite, with a spectacle of stars lighting the clear sky. Enjoy your first-night camping in Ladakh.

Day 5 : Shiul Sumdo to Chaksung via Shiul Pass
    • Altitude Changsung:- 4,900m/16,100ft
    • Altitude Gain:- 300m/ 1,100ft
    • Distance:- 10km, 7hours
    • Moderate ascent
    • Cross Shiul Pass at an altitude of 5100 m/16700ft
    • Refill water on the way
    • Hot snacks and lunch at the campsite
    • Stay: in tents (twin sharing)

This is an interesting day of hiking, as you will encounter the first high pass today, Shiul Pass. Shiul Pass is situated at an altitude of 4900 meters and it lies en route to Chaksung. It takes 2 to 3 hours to reach Shiul Pass from the Shiul Sumdo campsite. Following a moderate ascent, you will reach the pass and from the top, you can witness stunning views of Ladakh Range and Karakoram Range.


The entire trek from Shiul Sumdo to Chaksung is about 6 km and it takes 5 to 6 hrs to complete the trek. We will reach the Chaksung campsite by lunchtime and have a scrumptious meal at the campsite. You can also take an acclimatization walk for 1-2 hr after lunch, which is quite essential in high-altitude Himalayan treks. We will camp overnight in our tents.

Day 6 : Chaksung to Dzo Jongo base camp via Chak Pass
    •  Altitude:- 5,200m/17,100ft.
    •  Altitude Gain:- 300m/  1,000ft .
    •  Distance:- 5km, 4hours.
    •  Difficult level of ascent.
    •  Cross Chak Pass 5,500m/18,000ft.
    •  Snacks and hot lunch provided at the campsite.
    •  Night stay in tent (twin sharing).

This is yet another trekking day filled with excitement and adventure. Today we will trek to the Dzo Jongo Base camp and also climb another high Pass, the Chak Pass on the way. While the trek is quite short today, about 4 km, however, the ascent is quite difficult and steep. The terrain gets steeper and steeper as you climb ahead.


Today you will get your first glimpse of the Dzo Jongo peak, which is otherwise well hidden within the Markha Valley. Weather here is unpredictable and changes instantaneously and while trekking to the base camp you can enjoy the stunning views of Kang Yatse and other mountain ranges as they change color with the shifts in weather.


The Dzo Jongo Base Camp is situated at an altitude of 17100 ft and is higher than the Base Camp of Kang Yatse. From the basecamp, you will get splendid views of the Markha Valley as well as the Karakoram Range. We will reach the campsite by lunchtime and enjoy our lunch at the campsite. In winters the campsite is usually covered in snow. We will stay overnight in camps.

Day 7 : Rest day + Training day (Summit night)

    • TTH team will issue you the technical equipments
    • Learn how to use technical equipments
    • Briefing and planning for the summit
    • Don’t exhaust your body, take rest as much as you can
    • Push for the Summit at 10 pm (Timings may get change)

Today we will rest and accumulate our energy for the summit. Our team will issue technical equipment and also demonstrate their uses for the trek. Today you will practice using the technical equipment for the summit trek. After practicing, take enough rest so that you can be ready for the summit at night.


Our team usually pushes for the summit by 10 PM so that we can reach the summit by early morning and enjoy a spectacular sunset. Gear up in the equipment you're received and get ready for the biggest climb so far, the climb to the Dz Jongo Summit.

Day 8 : Summit and back to Base camp

    • Altitude:- 6,250 m/20,500 ft
    • Trek 7 km each way, 11 hrs
    • Reach on the Summit by 5-6 am
    • Reach to Base camp by 11am
    • Packed breakfast on the and hot lunch at camp site
    • Carry enough hot water, less water point at glacier(very cold)

The summit climb to the Dzo Jongo peak is going to be long and hectic but once you make it to the summit, you will understand that all the arduous climb was worth it. It is 6 km on both sides and thus one of the longest and most challenging climbs, which only gets steeper and steeper as you climb.


The first 20 to 30 minutes of the trek involves only a fairly easy walk on the leveled ground and you arrive at your first rest point. The climb from here becomes steeper and after 40 minutes of climbing, you will arrive at the Advanced Base Camp. The trail becomes even steeper and while the trail is not technical, the snow can make the climb quite difficult.


You will spot crevasses on the way to the summit and move slowly and cautiously as the climb to the summit is very steep. You will reach the summit by 5 to 6 AM. From the summit, you can spot peaks like Kang Yatse I and II as well as the Changthang Valley mountains.


As you go through each rest point the path becomes steeper and steeper until you make it to the summit at an altitude of 6250 meters. The sunrise at such a high altitude is almost a surreal experience and one of the biggest defining moments of the trek. After enjoying the spellbinding views from the summit, we will head towards the base camp once again and reach the camp by noon. Have lunch at the campsite and rest for the remaining day at the base camp.

Day 9 : Base Camp to Chokdo via Kongmaru La & drive to Leh
    • Altitude:- Kongmaru 5,200m/17,100ft, Chokdo 3,700m/12,100ft
    • Trek 14 km, 8 hours
    • Descent to Chokdo (Shang Valley) from KongmaruLa is little long
    • Highest Altitude pass crossing to the trek makes it a difficult day
    • It will take 3-4 hours of hike for Kongmaru La Pass

    Day 10: Buffer Day

    • Buffer day will be used in case we are unable to summit due to unforeseen circumstances

    • Buffer day cost is not included in the travel plan
    • If buffer day is not used during the expedition, you can use it for Rafting in Zanskar River, Mountain Biking, Motorcycle tour, Khardung La visit, One day trip to Pangong Lake, Ziplining.

Our return journey starts today as we descend from Dzo Jongo Base Camp to Chokdo and cross even another high pass, the Kongmaru La Pass. The Kongmaru La Pass is located at an altitude of 5200 m and crossing the pass makes today’s trek a little difficult. From the Pass, you can enjoy stunning views of Ladakh Range as well as the Indus Valley. The views of Indus Valley are quite different and you will spot reddish copper and basalt trails leading up the mountains. This is quite a different view as compared to earlier.

The descent from the Kongmaru La Pass is quite steep and it may require roping to descend safely. Further climbing down a rocky terrain will bring you to Chokdo and from here you will drive back to Leh which is approximately at a distance of 60 km.


Day 10: Buffer Day

Sometimes it may require more than 9 days to make it to the summit due to unforeseen conditions. We recommend you keep a buffer day in your travel plan. In case of unfavorable conditions, we will wait at the base camp for an extra day and attempt to make the summit once again. However, using a buffer day is a team decision. Also, note that the cost of the buffer day is not included in the package. 3000 INR per day per person is to be paid for buffer day. If the buffer day is not used it can be used for sightseeing and taking part in adventure activities like Rafting in Zanskar, Zip Line, Mountain Biking, Motorcycle tour, etc.

First of all everyone to reach Leh.


You have to come to our hotel, once you book the trek our trek coordinator will share with you the hotel name, location and contact person number.


Choose any option to reach Leh

  1. The easiest and best way to travel is to fly to Kushok Bakula Rimpochi Airport located in Leh. It is just 4 km away from the main city. The airport is well connected to Delhi and also receives flights from Mumbai, Srinagar, Jammu, Chandigarh and other general destinations in India. Even international travelers can fly directly from major cities like Kolkata, Mumbai and Delhi. You can find taxis outside the airport or book a cab to reach the required destination.


  1. There are two road routes to Leh
  • Manali (Himachal Pradesh ) to Leh via Baralacha La, Lachulung La and Tanglang La and It covers a distance of 500 km.
  • Srinagar to Leh via Zoji La, Lamayuru Lunar Landscape and Kargil and It covers a distance of 450 km.


  1. You cannot reach Leh directly by train as there is no train station in Ladakh. The nearest railway station is Jammu Jammu Tawi (700 km from Ladakh) which is well connected with Delhi, Kolkata and Mumbai.


  • TTH’s Tata Sumo, Tempo Traveller or similar vehicles will pick-up you.

You can take any option of Manali Highway, Srinagar Highway or direct flight to go back from Leh. Our services are up to hotel only and hotel check out time is 10:30 AM.

Normally TTH expect to carry your personal luggage on your own, if you wish to offload your backpack, you can give it to Mule.

The backpack cannot weigh more than 11 kgs. Backpack should have waterproof cover. Suitcases/strolleys/ bags will not be allowed.

For the cancellation of services due to any avoidable/unavoidable reasons, Trek The Himalayas must be notified of the same in writing at  At the time we receive your written cancellation, refunds based on the total fare are as follows.

If by a rare consequence TTH calls off/cancels a trek:

At TTH, we almost never call off or cancel our treks. But in the rare event that we do call off or cancel a trek due to any unforeseen circumstances or natural catastrophes like continuous rain or snow, thunderstorms, snowstorms, landslides, floods, earthquakes, or any other natural calamity that prevents us from carrying out a trek in a safe manner, unforeseeable circumstances like local riots, curfews, pandemics, lockdowns, government orders, or any such situations that prevents a safe trekking experience, TTH will issue a voucher summing up to the same amount as your trek fee. The voucher can be redeemed on any of the treks over a period of the next year.



  • If the entirety of your group fails to reach or cross the pickup point, or abandons the trek, due to any unforeseen circumstances like snowfall or heavy rainfall, landslide, and such, in such a case the voucher will not be issued. You can, however, choose to repeat the trek with us.


  • The voucher is also not issued if for any reason you have to come down from the trek. The trek leader may send you down from the trek, owing to reasons like lack of fitness, AMS, blood pressure, turn-around-time, health issues, or if you are found smoking/ drinking, or breaking the rules of the trek. Vouchers are issued only when the whole trek is cancelled or called off on behalf of TTH.



In the rare event that TTH shifts a trek:

As we mention always, weather conditions at high altitudes are extremely unpredictable and can change at any time of any day. Also, situations like natural calamities or political unrest, pandemics and lockdowns, etc are out of our control and if an event cannot run under any such circumstances that we do not directly have control over then we will try to give you an alternative trek, which means your trek will be shifted from one trek to another, which will be safer and more favourable.

In these cases, a voucher is issued to mitigate the difference in cost between the two treks. You can redeem the voucher at any time over a period of one year from the date of issue. A refund fee or refund of the difference is not applicable.




  • Change of trek batch is dependent on the availability of seats in the batch
  • In case of transferring a trek to a friend, he/she should satisfy all the mandatory requirements put forward by TTH
  • TTH holds the right to change/cancel the policies, without prior notice
  • Cash refund is applicable only in case of bookings made without using any promotional offer code or vouchers

If a trip must be delayed or the itinerary changed due to bad weather, road conditions, transportation delays, government intervention, airline schedules, sickness, or other contingency for which TTH or its agents cannot make provision, the cost of delays and/or other changes are the responsibility of the participant.
